Ellii United Press Science Writer New York (U.R) The national blood program of the American Red Cross is just two years old, vet already blood is being sup plied to l.aou nospuaia in ja states. In all, more than 500,000 pints of blood for medical use have been provided through 30 reg ional programs in operation since the first center was established at Rochester, N. Y., on Jan. 12, 1948. A spokesman for the program explained that blood supplied through the Red Cross is taken from voluntary donors, tested as to medical safety, typed as to blood group and Rh factor, and TODAY, Mon., Tues. Blood Saves Many Livti The use of blood is dramatic. One use is for transfusions .to undcr-par patients who are about to undergo surgery and need a "building up." It also is used for complete blood-exchange opera tions for babies suffering from erythroblastosis, a serious blood impairment caused by the incom patible Rh blood factors of their parents. In many other cases, mothers suffering childbirth hemorrhages receive blood from the Red Cross centers. Chronic anemics and suf ferers from leukemia have had their lives extended. In addition to whole blood dis tributed, large quantities of valu able blood components, or de rivatives, nave Been made avail able. Immune Serum Globulin One of the derivatives is Im mune serum globulin, which can be used either as an immunizing agent or modifying agent in measles. Physicians point out that use of the serum usually prevents complications which leave per manent impairment, such as heart damage, deafness and en cephalitis, commonly known as sleeping sickness. The Red Cross said that during the 1948-49 fiscal year about 700, 000 units of immunte serum glob ulin were distributed through state health departments. "While the regional blood cen ters have not yet reached the point where the whole nation is served," a spokesman said, "the country generally is reap ing vast benefits from these de rivatives, which have been pro cessed from surplus plasma re turned by the armed forces at the end of the war." Any Rogue valley amateur en tertainer is welcome to enter the auditions. The contest is being sponsored by the station in connection with the Oregon appearance next month of the "Original Amnjeur Hour," started 14 years ago by the late Major Bowes. In a broad cast from Portland March 26, the Medford winner will have an op portunity to compete with other amateurs from all over the state. The audition will be held Monday at 4:30 p. m. at the Cra terian theater. It is important for contestants to be there at the time set, together with accom panist, music and whatever else is necessary to give their act when cariod.g. The trouble one wearing bi focals has going down stairs will not occur if he or she wears glasses that have a quarter inch! or so ofjlhe distant vision lens under the near vision lens at the lower edge. A good many persons even only 35 or 40 years old go all dizzy and sick the first few times they try to turn somersaults. Looking at the situation from all of its angles, 'I'm inclined to regard . that as a wholesome decision. jET'S look at it this way: If you can drive men to work wit It an injunction (whose en forcement weapon is the charge of contempt of court! you can drive them to work with a bull whip. Whenever men can be driven to work with EITHER AN IN JUNCTION OR A BULL WHIP liberty will be dead. Trying to stop strikes with in junctions is like trying to cure stomach ulcers with a nnistnrd plaster on the chest. The pain caused by the mustard plaster will temporarily take your mind off the pain in your stomach, but it won't cure the ulcer. To cure the ulcer, you'll have to get at the CAUSE OF IT. The same is true of strikes in key in dustries, such as coal. yyHAT.is the cause? Well, Here Is my notion of It: Big, disastrous strikes, like the coal strike, that hurt everybody, come about because of too much power in too few hands. We nad such strikes when employers held too much power. We still have them now that labor has too much power. We'll continue to have them as long as power remains un equally distributed. YOU want examples? Here is one: Monopoly among employers is forbidden by law. Labor unions are EXEMPTED from the operations of this law. Thus they are given the power to close down an entire industry, such as coal. Coal is a basic industry. Other industries, such as steel, depend upon it for their exist ence. Steel also Is a basic industry. Other industries depend upon it. Transportation is basic. Trans portation leans heavily on coal and steel. Coal also is needed to keep people warm. Because of these facts, and they are facts, a coal strike can paralyze our whole economy. The power to paralyze our economy is TOO MUCH power to place in the hands of the miners union and its officials. OUT we can't cure these evils by driving men to work under the whip of an injunction. If we're seeking a CURE, we must get back to the cause. The cause, it seems to me, is too much pow er in too few hands such as giv ing MONOPOLY POWER to unions while denying it to others. w H1LE we're at It, let's do some realistic reasoning about the right k strike. The right to strike is a funda mental right. The same holds true In the case of the right to strike. IN Washington, after Judge Keech's decision thorp is much muttering in the politicians' beards about SEIZING THE COAL INDUSTRY. That is another mustnrd plas ter. It would take our minds temporarily off the coal strike pain, but the ulcer in the stom ach would continue. Seizing the coal mines could Be the tirst act of SOCIALISM in America. Stomach ulcers, if neglected, can KILL. Socialism can kill our American way of life. We'd better get back to fun damentals, such as finding the causes of our troubles and re moving them, instead of mud dling along with mustard plas ters.
