Crash Fished Out Of Choppy Sea

Vancouver, B. C, Feb. 16
(via ship-to-shore radio) We
came across three survivors off
shore and fished them out of the
water. They were pretty shak
en, cold and wet. They didn't
look too good.
I was about to turn about
when we noticed the smoke
flares on the island. We headed
the Cape Perry toward land.
The waves were pretty choppy
even in the bsly.
Seven On Beach
On the beach seven guys were
huddled around a fire. They said
Staff Sergeant Vitale Trippodi
of Brooklyn was on a snow-covered
ledge. They had taken the
poor, screaming fellow down
from a tree after he dangled
from it by his ankle for hours.
They said they covered him with
a parachute and hoped a ground
party would be organized imme
diately to rescue him.
v I figured we better get the
seven aboard first, feed them and
get them warm then look for
Trippodi.
We got them into a lifeboat
and started for the Cape Perry.
I was worried about the big
breakers. Then it happened. A
roller capsized the boat tossing
everyons into the drink. But it
really didn't matter anyway.
Those guys were already wet
from being in a steady rain for
more than 36 hours.
Could Hardly Talk
I felt pretty good about finally
getting those guys out. They
could hardly talk. We had a
bottle of rum and a bottle of
scotch aboard and we gave them
some drinks. They livened up
enough to tell us about hearing
shots from several sections of the
Island.
They felt sure the other six
men were okay. We gave the 10
rescued some ham and eggs and
put them to bed.
The survivors compared notes
when they got aboard the Cape
Perry. From what I can gather
after they hit the ground, some
were hung up in trees, some
landed in slushy lakes, and God
knows what else.
I never saw a guttier bunch
of men. I know I wouldn t bail
out of any ship let alone in a
gale at midnight.
Federal Farm Plan
To Be Discussed
A) Meeting Here
Government farm price sup
port programs, now in operation
or proposed, will be discussed
at a series of meeting through
out the state in late February
and March, Robert W. Schmidt,
chairman of the Oregon State
Grange agricultural committee,
announced this week. One such
mealing will be held here
March 18.
The public will be invited to
the meetings, which are being
called as a result of action tak
en at the last State Grange meet
ing. Delegates refused to take a
stand on the Brannan plan and
recommended Instead that the
Stale Grange sponsor a series of
conferences for discussion of
that and other farm programs.
Discussions Set
Vern Livesay, Portland, for
mer member of the State Granr
agricultural committee, will pre
sent the Brannan plan ai ilie
meeting. The agricultural act of
1949 will be discussed by Jay
Weseott, state, PMA fieldman.
Ben Buisman, editor of the Ore
gon Grange Bulletin, will ex
plain the National Grange farm
program. Discussion from the
floor will be invited.
Initial meeting will be at Sa
lem February 17, in the Dairy
Co-op plant auditorium. The fol
lowing day, a southern Oregon
meeting will be held at the
courthouse in Medford.
Other meetings have been
scheduled at Bend February 24.
The Dalles February 25 and La
Grande March 11.

Medford Man Fined
For Auto Skirt Theft
Ashland, Feb. 16 Keith D.
Sullivan, Medford, pleaded
guilty in Ashland municipal
court yesterday to a charge of
larceny from a vehicle, poller
reported. He was sentenced to 10
days in jail, fine S25. and asses
sed court costs of $2.50. The Jail
sentence was suspended on con
dition that he make restitution
for the stolen property.
Sullivan was arrested by Ash
land city police Tuesday evening
near the armory with stolen fen
der skirts in his possession, of
ficers reported. The articles were
reported stolen about three
months ago, and the theft had j
been under investigation since
that time.

Defenders Dig In For All-Out War
On Invaders In Yukon Army Game
Donjek River, Y. T., Feb. 16
(U.R) Canadian and, American
army units dug in today along
the frozen Donjek river here in
the ice-bound Yukon before
faunching an all-out attack on
"invading" forces rolling down
out of Alaska.
American reinforcements ar
rived in Whitehorse by plane
from Colorado Springs, Colo., as
air support forces began major
operations in "Exercise Sweet
brier," joint Canadian-American
winter war games.
The "allied" forces face the
"aggressor" just 1V4 miles across
the river here.
Newsmen "Wiped Out"
Yesterday, most of the news
correspondents covering the
maneuvers were, "wiped out"
when four F-82 twin-Mustangs
of the U. S. Alaskan command,
flown by aggressor pilots, strafed
a vehicle carrying the newsmen
to the "front."
This apparently was an extra
lick for the fighter pilots, for a
few miles farther up the highway
a Canadian ambulance unit was
found to have been strafed, also.

Overtime Pay Denied
Tax Bureau Workers
v Salem, Ore., Feb. 16 (U.R)
F-The state civil service commis
sion, in a decision handed down
Wednesday, denied a request for
overtime pay for five employees
of the state tax commission.
The board ruled that the em
ployees are in salary brackets
of more than the $280 monthly
limited permitted for receipt of
overtime pay under civil service
rules and regulations. Tax Com
missioner Ray Smith had asked
for extra pay for auditors work
ing Saturday to help the state
catch up on delinquent income
taxes that would come under
the statute of limitations unless
collected soon.
AWOL Soldier Should
Be Thankful For Arrest
La Grande, Feb. 16 (U.R) La
Grande police think army recruit
Robert D. Schultz, 19, of Half
way, Ore., should be thankful
they arrested him.
Schultz admitted " to officers
that he had been absent without
leave from Ft. Lewis, Wash.,
since Dec. 23.
"We picked him up when he
was loitering around a hotel
just in time to save him from- a
charge of desertion," Police
Chief Lester Sater said.
Sater explained that army reg
ulations allow a 60-day AWOL
period before the more serious
charge of desertion is preferred.

Camp Made
A nearby tent settlement was
headquarters for a gasoline sup
ply detachment of American
Negro troops, commanded by Lt.
Lewis H. Williams of Sunflower,
Ala. He' said he and his men
rolled in at 2 a.m., Tuesday, and
went straight to work unloading
their trucks and making camp.
Williams lost six of his 21 men
within the first 24 hours because
of frozen feet. He blew his breath
on his chilled hands in the 30-below-zero
weather and said that
as far as he was concerned, the
Arctic has proved to be a far
more formidable enemy than the
aggressor.
Two Persons Drown In
Fall From Gangplank
Seattle, Feb. 16 (U.R) Two

plank, Webster said he slipped.
"I hit the water, came up and

said. "I swam around for a
while and then somebody tossed
me a rope."
Police sard Webster threaten
ed to commit suicide and was
being held in protective custody.
