The other Southern Oregon conference-district 4 basketball contests Saturday will send Kerby (Illinois Valley) to Ash land for a game at the junior high gym there at 8:15 p.m. Tornado Must Win The Black Tornado must win both games this week-end to re main in the race for district conference honors that will be decided this season on the basis of the regular season rather than a tournament. Last season Med ford won the district title in a season ending tourney. This season other schools In the district made sure that the Tornado would have no chance to repeat last season wnen ivieu ford had a so-so regular season -j onri ihon ivnn the tourna ment at Eagle Point without too much trouble in doing so. Grants Pass does not figure to have much trouble in defeating Ashland on the Cavemen's court tonight so meaiora must win -keep within a game of tying Grants Pass in the standings. The Cavemen and Tornado play February zo ana um the district champion. Other Games Tonljht Games in the conference and district tonight will send Eagle Point to Medford, Central Point to Klamath Falls and Ash land to Grants Pass. Mathematically speaking only Ashland, Central Point arid Illi nois Valley have been eliminat ed from the title race. Each team plays the other twice and with seven teams in the conference that means each school plays 14 games. Vanity Games MS Coaches of other teams than these three, however, know that a break or two here and there can give one of them a victory that will knock one of the other four out of the running. Donkey Basketball Due Eagle Point Saturday Eagle Point, Feb. 10 "Don key basketball" with teams of Eagle Point businessmen and farmers playing a team compos ed of teachers in the E.P. pub lic schools will be held Satur day in the school gym at 8 p.m. The donkeys are expected to give most of the "competition." Eagles Here At KF Saturday Wrestling Big Crowd For Weekly Contests An enthusiastic crowd which Jammed the armory to the raft ers last night witnessed by far the best wrestling card of the lau season. They were drawn there by Gorgeous Gus, the wres tling bear, and nobody went away disappointed. Gus mauled Georee Dusette for seven minutes and 52 sec onds before stretching out over him to win with a body press. Bill Fox, the bear's owner, had done a good job of training him and although Dusette flipped the bear several times and came within a split second of winning a S1UIJ bonus lor a rolling fall, the bruin tossed Dusette around enough to wear him down. Baar After Refers Th bear apparently didn't like the looks of Referee Earl Yoak ley for whenever he got a chance he was all over the arbiter and Fox had to pull him off. The Great Atlas had to stoop pretty low to whip Karl Gray but when he did it there was no question of whether Gray would come back for more. Gray gave the conceited New Yorker more than he bargained for and was generally roughing up the self styled big shot when Atlas of fered a handshake as an offer to cease the rough stuff. 'Gray accepted and for several minutes it was a fine wrestling match with clean breaks. Atlas finally saw his chance and smacked Grav with a virions wallop to the mid-section and applied a full nelson for the pay off. Lipscomb Winner Jack Lipscomb outsmarted Fox to take the deciding fall in the opener. After each had taken a fall, Lipscomb feigned injury and when Fox turned to Yoak- ley to see if the ref wanted to stop the match, Lipscomb grabbed him and won the fracas with a half crab. One AAU Game Slated Tonight One game starting at 7 p.m. will be played in the local AAU Basketball league today at the Junior high gym instead of two as originally scheduled, Presi dent Hugh Williams announced this morning. The Butte Falls- Timber Products game was for feited to the timbermen. Slated for the lone clash are Phoenix against the Crazy- Swayze quintet. The early time was scheduled, Williams explain ed, so that players may play their AAU game and get to the Medford-Eagle Point high game at the senior high gym if they wish. Vezelich Named Eugene Manager Eugene, Ore., Feb. 10 iU.R) Eugene Baseball Club President Art Hadler said Lou Vezelich had been picked as player-manager for the new Eugene entry in the Far West Baseball league. Vezelich was batting champion of the league last year for Val lejo with a 406 average. He is a former Sacramento, Cal out fielder in the Pacific Coast league. Hadler also said the new 3,000- seat ballpark for the Eugene club would be completed by April 20. G.P. Player Top Scorer Pat Ford, high-scoring Grants Pass guard, is top scorer In the Southern Oregon conference with Dick Smith of Ashland second, unofficial statistics re vealed today. Ford has scored 73 points in six games lor an average of 12 points and Smith has tallied 83 In eight. Highest man in the Medford lineup Is Jack Morris, who has made 47 points in five games for a 0.4 average, with Bob Shores ranking next among the Black Tornado with 45 points in five games for a 9-point aver age. Tom Schubert ranks third in the conference with 69 in seven. Jerry Langer (Ashland) fourth with 76 in eight, Pat Simmons with 57 in six is fifth, Morris sixth, Vern Craft (Grants Pass) seventh, Shores eighth,- Mike Ttrautman (Central Point) ninth and Bill Toole (Klamath) 10th. SOC To Play At Chico Tonight And Saturday Asmand, eb. lu Southern Oregon college's basketball 1miti will play Chico State collegu to night and Saturday evening in two Far Western conference games at Chico, Cal., in a series that probably will tell whether the Red Raiders stay in the cham pionship race. Two victories for SOC this week-end will keep them in the rush for honors as Chico now leads the conference. However, one or two defeats will Just about end the Raiders' chances. A win for Rogue River would give it the regular season title but a Butte Falls win would tie the lead. Other class B games sched uled will find Jacksonville play ing at St. Mary s, Gold Hill at Prospect and Phoenix at Talent.
