A Class B High School Basketball On Friday Jans In Jackson county will be focused either in person or from afar on the Rogue River high vs. Butte Falls high game slated Friday at Butte Falls high where the winner of the regular county class B season title will be decided. A victory for the Chieftains will give the Rogue River quin tet the regular season champion ship with seven victories and no losses while the Butte Falls Log gers would have a record of five wins and two defeats. Could Be Tied Up On the other hand should the Oregon, OSC Play Eugene On Week-end Corvallis, Feb. 9 The second round in the four-game series with the Oregon Webfoots is the only action this week for Ore gon State's defending PCC bas ketball champions. The contest is booked for Mc Arlhur court in Eugene Friday at 8 p.m. As a result of breaking even with Washington here last week end, the Beavers are on the ragged edge of elimination in the 1950 northern division flag chase with five victories and four defeats. Must Win Friday They are faced with the neces sity of winning Friday to stay within shouting distance of the pace-setting Washington State Cougars. Slats Gill's on and off Orange men drew first blood in the in-tra-state series when they out ran the speedy Webfoots for a decisive 65 to 49 victory in Gill coliseum three weeks ago. The Beavers expect a much tougher battle on Oregon's home court where Jolin warren s quin tet has lost only one league en counter this campaign. Detroit, Toronto Win Hockey League Games; Boston, Chicago Lose Bv United Press The Detroit Red Wings, erst while high flying club m the National Hockey league, were airborne once more today after being grounded for nine games without a victory. A five-goal onslaught in the last period gave the Wings a 9 7 to 2 margin over the Chicago ' Black Hawks last night and kept Detroit 10 noints ahead of second place Montreal and Toronto. The Maple Leafs kept pace with the Wings by stopping Bos ton. 3 to 1, and moving into a sr-cond place tie with the idle Canadicns. Loggers come off with a victory tomorrow evening there would be a two-way tie for top spot be tween them and Rogue River, each with six wins and one loss. Just what will happen in that case as far as a playoff is con cerned wasn't known. Other games in the county class B conference Friday eve ning will find Jacksonville play ing at St. Mary's.(Medford), Gold Hill at Prospect and Phoenix at Talent gymns. Tuesday night up at Butte Falls, the Talent Bulldogs upset the applecart for the Loggers by pinning 46 to 40 defeat on Butte Falls for the Loggers' first loss oi the class B season. Talent was the better team that night and the Chieftains may be Friday. Last week-end's games saw Butte Falls topple Prospect, Tal ent drop St. Mary's, Jacksonville down Phoenix and Rogue River edge Gold Hill. Regular Season The other conference game played Tuesday night found Phoenix high downing Prospect, 52 to 30. Both games played that evening were postponed from earlier in the 1950 season. Games in the regular season will not decide the team which will represent this county in the district tournament to decide the entry in the state class B champ ionship tourney. Instead a coun ty class B tournament win oe held at Eagle Point February 17 and 18. Which teams will face each other in this tournament will be decided on how they complete the regular season. OAK GROVE BASKETBALL Oak Grove school first string basketball team will play at Glide, Ore., Saturday, February 11, it was announced today. It was not stated whether it would be in the afternoon or evening. FAVORED IN NORTH Seattle, Feb. 9 (U.R) A newspaper-sponsored poll today re vealed that 98.9 per cent of the persons answering the letter vote were in favor of televising the University of Washington basketball home games. Last night, 14 years later, Walcott knocked out John son's son, Harold in the third round. But the coincidence was not the only amazing thing about this bout. Johnson tumbled to the canvas for the full count without being struck. He was downed in the second round bv a series of vicious lefts and rights but in the third he sprung out after the bell, appar ently fit. Johnson Injured Before Walcott could strike a blow, however, Johnson sud denly stiffened, put his fight glove to his back and pitched forward on his face. As Walcott stepped away, startled. Johnson rolled over on his back, wincing with pain. He dragged himself over to the ring apron as Referee Dave Beloff completed the 10-count. Ringside doctors indicated Johnson suffered a sacroiliac in jury and took him to Presby terian hospital. He told them he was hurt in this manner in a previous bout. , 300 Tee Off In Texas Golf Open With Snead San Antonio, Tex.. Feb. 9 OI.R) A bulky field of 300 teed off todav in the 23rd annual $10,000 Texas open golf tourna ment with Sam Snead receiving top billing. Snead, the number one money winner in current winter play, toured the Fort Sam Houston course with a two-under-par 69 yesterday in a practice round. Even his balky putter was be having. Gym Eagle Point, Feb. 9 Men who will play on the teams taking part in the donkey basketball game Saturday night in the Eagle Point high gym were an nounced today by School Super intendent Glenn Hale, a member of one team. Proceeds -from this hilarious affair In which players try to make stubborn donkeys move when players want to move and go fast when so wishing, will go toward Eagle Point school activi ties and to the athletic fund. Playing on the "mule train" team will be Lyle Van Scoy, Ev erett Hannah, Jim Wallis, Spike Mallory, Buzz Whitman, Don Ashpole, Floyd Bubb ani Leon ard Bradshaw with .t Kent and Rciand Jenks as managers. This team is said to have had years of experience riding mules Faculty men taking part and playing on the other team in this donkey basketball clash will be Emmctt Ritter, Clarence Davis, Hale, William Barnes, Shirley Callaghan, Don McGov ern, Hugh Eskridge, Darrel Cope and and Steven Whipple, man ager. Members of the faculty team claim with the "mule train" team's experience in riding mules that this group of Eagle Point farmers and businessmen will have a decided edge. What it sim mers down to is a matter of compe t i t i v e costs. In football a college must "buv" 50 rjlav- ers if it wants a good club. In basketball the cost is just one fifth as steep because you only need 10 men to hit the big time. SMALLER COLLEGES Sa there ii no question that the smaller colleges are switch ing to basketball, because of the lesser costs, instead of at tempting to match the more powerful and allegedly "pure" major universities as a gridiron attraction. It works like this: The little schools can't afford competitive bidding; therefore they haven't good teams and so they don't attract the paying customers. What are some of the big name teams of basketball? That's easy City College of New York, St. John's (which doesn't even have a football team), Se ton Hall, St. Louis, Canisius, Bradley, Bowling Green, De paul and others of their igno minious gridiron ilk. St. Louis has dropped football because of its grid deficit. Now Canisius has followed suit after losing $35,000 and is shifting its attention to basketball in hopes of rescuing the athletic fund. DROPPED $135,000 St. Bonaveniure has dropped $135,000 in three years and only recently lost its highly regarded coach, Hughie De vore, to New York university, which couldn't lick Vassar on an off Saturday. This is not to say that St. Bonaveniure is quitting football. But the sport dide't pay. Could that have been because of com petitive bidding against such as Notre Dame? It all points up the number of prevaricators who assertedly are complying with the NCAA sanity code, or, as some people facetiously refer to it, the "sani tary" code, limiting aid to ath letes. Only seven schools confessed voluntarily that they were giv ing more than the allotted aid to athletes when the NCAA sent out its fill-it-in-on-your-hon-or questionnaire. These schools were Boston college, Villanova, Virginia, Maryland, VMI, VPI, and The Citadel. Thursday, February 9, 1950 DeMolay Members Set Shady Cove Visit Medford DeMolay members made plans at their meeting last night to visit the Shady Cove Masonic lodge Friday, February 10. All DeMolays are asked to meet at the temple in Medford at 7 p.m. for transportation to Shady Cove, and during the meeting there the chapter will give DeMolay degree work for the Masons. Medford's Job's Daughters were invited to witness the clos ing ceremony for last night's meeting, and refreshments and dancing followed. Fruit Flies Suggest Clue To Discover Of Cancer Doctor Claims Providence, R. I (U.R) A Rhode Island State college zool ogy professor believes his exper iments with fruit flies possibly suggests that humans may in herit a weakness for cancer. Dr. Ernest Hartung has devel oped a strain of flies, 80 per cent ot which develop cancer. In an other strain he has bred, less than one per cent got tumors. He hopes his continuing ex periments will discover the sin gle factor in the fruit fly's ge netic background which makes It suspectible to cancer.
