The council points out that this totals 03,000 deaths, but said 2,000 were duplicated in the various categories. Lowest On Record The death rate for the year in all types of accidents was 61.2 per 100,000 population the low est rate on record, surpassing the previous low of 64.3 in 1948. Portland On List Portland, Ore., and Kansas City, Mo., had the greatest drop in fatal accidents among cities over 200,000 population. Each was 41 per cent below 1948. San Francisco had a 40 per cent de crease, and Cincinnati, O., a drop of 39 per cent. Fifty -three cities of 10,000 population or more completed the year without a singe traffic death. Great Falls, Mont., with a population of 40,1000, was the largest city with a perfect rec ord. Minneapolis and San Francis co had the lowest traffic death rate among cities over 500,000 population, each with 2.3 deaths per 10,000 registered motor vehicles. Family Of 6 Lives On $95.96 For One Month New York, Feb. 7 (U.R) Housewives who na their hus bands for more money for the food budget could take a lesson today from City Welfare Com missioner Kaymond ra. iiuiiara. The 815,000 -a -year commis sioner kept his own family of six on a food budget of $95.96 last month about 52 cents a day for each person. Hilliard conducted the experi ment to prove that a recent seven per cent cut in the indivi dual food allowances for persons on relief was justified. The commissioner pointed out that his family of six would have received $124.50 for food if they had been on relief and thus would have saved $28.54. He admitted, however, that the money saved would have gone for cigarets and other items not included in the food budget. Mrs. Mary Hilliard, his wife, said she got along fine on the budget by buying cheaper cuts of meat. Rogue Cemetery Members Accept Free Water Offer Dead line Sunday Classified Noon Saturdays. 'fa w , wowdihuJ Rogue River, Feb. 7 At a special meeting of the Cemetery association held February 4. in the Civic club rooms, members voted to accept the city council s offer of free water for the ceme tery and to buy water pipes at once. Regarding installing water Sipes, it was recalled that since eginning of the first cemetery in early Woodville days, people of the town and especially of the surrounding country have al ways proudly responded when called to work In their cemetery and it was decided to inform them their help will be needed in the near future. To Go Through Ranch "We will connect with the city main at the Pharr ranch," said Phil Strahan. chairman of the association. "Pharr has given us the right to run the pipe through his place. It will go through the garden, berry patch and the hog pen. That part must be dug by hand, about 250 feet. Then it will run through the clover field and we plan to use a subsoiler and pull the pipe through by tractor. But it must be done soon, before the clover starts to grow. We can't set a definite date and notify workers ahead of time because the weather is so changeable. But we will call as many as we can contact as soon as the weather breaks. "This is the Woodville ceme tery," stated Mrs. W. A. White. "We retained the original name and did not change it when the town became Rogue River. The cemetery association was first organized in 1884, later the books and records were destroy ed by fire and the association was organized in 1924. All persons owning lots, or heirs of owners are members of the association. Dues are $1 year and money thus derived is used for general expenses and upkeep of the driveways. But the care of the individual lots depends upon the owners if liv ing and upon their death the care of their lot falls to the duty of their surviving relatives or friends. It is the custom of the community to gather on a set date each year, usually the week end prior to Decoration day, and work together to clean and im prove the entire cemetery. "Many of the early settlers who are buried there have no families left, they have all passed on or moved away," said Strahan, "but we try to take care of their graves and we would appreciate it if the new residents would join us in this worthy work, whether they own lots or not they can help in this civic service.
