Opera Star to Sing i For Coming Concert Civic Association Miss Dorothy Warenskjold, star of the San Francisco Opera company, will appear in concert in Medford Tuesday February 7 for the Jackson County Civic Music association. Miss Warensk- Jold, who Is substituting for Miss Eula Beal, was originally sched uled for February 13 but the date had to be changed due to conflicting appearances, it is an nounced by her manager. The young lyric soprano ap peared with the San Francisco Opera company the past two sea sons and was hailed by critics and audiences alike. This winter he has made two appearances as Sophie In a concert version of the Strauss opera, "Der Rosenkavaller" with Arthur Rodzinskl conducting the San Francisco Symphony orchestra in that city on January 19 and 31. Earlier in Januury. Miss Vi'menskjold gave recitals in Pendleton and Laurando, Ore. -The soprano's recital here will include rencn, cngnsn, ucr man and Scandinavian songs, elaslcal numbers and modern compositions. Mildred Stombs, concert pianist, will be Miss Warrenskjold's a c c o m p a nlst here. 1 Events Scheduled For Coming Month While January was rather a dull month socially, February al ready seems to promise interest, with a number of events being announced. Among these Is a games party which Junior Ser vice league members have planned for February 17 at the Rogue Valley Country club. Fur ther details will be announced loon, the committee promises. Another spring event, an an nual one with the league, will be the spring style show to be held in March and league committees are even looking ahead several more months and beginning to think about the second annual summer carnival. St. Valentino's Season To Bring Many Parties; Annual Event Announced With St. Valentine's day ap proaching, many organizations are making plans for valentine parties or luncheons. Among them is the Reames Social club, OES, which holds an annual public luncheon and card party. This year the looked-fmwnrd to affair will be Wednesday, Feb ruary 15, in the Masonic hall and luncheon will be served at 12:30 o clock, to be followed by cards. Grand Guardian Will Visit Bethel Medford bethel, Daughters of Job, will entertain the grand guardian, Mrs. C. D. Elhart of Ashland at the regular meeting of the bethel Wednesday night. Initiation will be staged as nart of the meeting, to begin at 7:30 p.m. Officers will rehearse Sunday at 1 p.m. and Monday at 4 p. m. at the Masonic temple. Wednes day's meeting will be preceded by a school of Instruction at 6:30 p.m. at the hall for all officers. Smyth, who were married at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hena gin, 815 West Thirteenth street last Sunday, January 22, are now making their home in Medford, The bride is the former Ber- nice Mary Koch, daughter of Frank Koch of Central point. and the bridegraam is the son of Orval Smyth of Klamath Falls. The service was read by the Rev. Lee Williams of Central Point and attendants were Mr. and Mrs. Donald Schreiner, brother-in-law and sister of the bridegroom from Klamath Falls. Mr. Smyth has been em ployed In Central Point since his graduation from Henley high scnooi in m7. at $1.00 Club To Be Scene Of Benefit Party For Dimes Drive Many groups and organization of the valley are aiding the an nul March of Dimes campaign with benefit events, and one of these is the dance and games par ty to be held at the Rogue Valley country club Monday, January 30. The party begins at 8 p.m. and during the evening refreshments will be served. The facilities of the club, and the services of the staff, are being donated in order that all proceeds may go towards the fund. Welcoming guests at the party will be Mayor and Mrs. Diamond Flynn and Mr. and Mrs. Claude Holmes, while Mrs. Richard House and Mrs. W, J. Thompson will take tickets. A large committee of members is assisting with the games. In cluded are Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bennett, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Watts, Mr. and Mrs. Myron An drews. Mr. and Mrs. Allyn A. New President Named By Kiwanian Dames; Garden Subject Given Mrs. Everett Faber, Central Point, was elected president lor the ensuing year for Kiwanian Dames at the January luncheon meeting of the group Tuesday at the Rogue Valley Country club. Mrs. Faber succeeds Mrs. Lloyd Sanders who has resigned from the presidency. New members introduced were Mrs. Eldon Burgess, Mrs. A. C. Leighton and Mrs. Chandler Drew. Mrs. R. H. The wedding will be in June. Miss Barbara Gunn Becomes Bride Of Marvin D. Hedges Miss Barbara Joan Gunn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George B. Gunn, 2514 Jacksonville high way, became the bride of Mar vin Dale Hedges in a ceremony held January 14 at the home of the Rev. and Mrs. Holly Roy jarvis, with tne itev. Mr. jarvis officiating. The bride's parents attended the couple. A reception followed at the home of the bride's parents, with Mrs. Forrest Riddle of San Diego. Cal., serving the wedding cake and Mrs. Virgil Grahm assisted. In Medford for the wedding were Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Rid dle of San Diego, uncle and aunt of the bridegroom. The bride attended Medford senior high school before her wedding and the bridegroom, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Hedges of Sioux City, la., attended Creighton university of Omaha, Neb. The couple will live in Sioux City. 4 Two Lodges Announce Annual Installation For Coming Saturday The Dramatic Order Knights of Khorassan and Idella Rogue santha, Nomads of Avrudakka, will hold the annual joint instal lation of officers Saturday. Feb ruary 4, in the Pythian building in Medford. The ceremonies are to begin at 8 p.m., and are for members of the two lodges, their husbands and wives and invited friends. Mrs. Baker Yarbrough, 1211 East Jackson street, will be host ess to members of Past Chief's club Wednesday, February 1 for a covered dish luncheon served at 1 o'clock. Newlywed Couple Living in Medford; Service In Stayton Of interest is the marriage January 7 of Miss Mary Jo Bax' ter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs Virgil Baxter, Marion, Ore., and Ralph Kramer, son of Mrs. Elsa Kramer. The newlyweds are liv ing here. The bride has been re siding in Corvallis and the bride groom who was graduated from Oregon State college this past term where he maiored in for estry, has made his home in Medford during the past three summers. The marriage was performed in the Baptist church at Stayton, Ore. The wedding setting was in pink and white and the bride was given in marriage by her father. Her gown of white satin was trimmed with seed pearls and her fingertip veil was arranged from a tiara of seed pearls. For her flowers the bride carried a bouquet of white carnations with orchid center. The bride was attended by her sisters, Mrs. Jack DeBow as matron of honor and Misses Joyce and Maxlne Baxter, bridesmaids and Evelyn Baxter, flowergirl. All wore tinted taf feta gowns with matching mitts and crowns of pink rosebuds. Herman Kramer acted as best man. Following the ceremony a re ception was neld in the cnurcn parlors. For traveling Mrs. Kra mer wore a Bray suit with black accessories and an orchid corsage. The bride Is a graduate of Jef ferson high school and the Salem Beauty school, and Mr. Kramer is a member of pni Kappa lau fraternity. After a short wedding trip the couple came to Medford and are at home at 819 Taylor street. Mrs. Baxter is employed at the Craterian beauty salon and Mr. Kramer at the fcd Fountain Lum ber company. Main Week Brings News Of Engagements; Wedding Day Set Romantic news continues to provide interest, with each week bringing its quota of engage ments and wedding dates. Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Matthews Jr., of Central Point announce the engagement and approach ing marriage of their daughter, Miss Mary Jane Matthews to Willie Harold Fischer, son of Mrs. Dena Fischer of Valentine, Neb. The wedding will be February 11. Miss Matthews, who was gra duated from school in Central Point, is employed at the Jack son County Chamber of Com merce office. Her fiance, who attended school in Nebraska, is now with the Medford corpora tion. He served in the army in 1944 and 194S, having been sta tioned In Europe for part of that time. Mr. and Mrs. Harry J. Moore of Talent recently announced the engagement of their daughter, Monice Lowrey, to Byron D. Winningham, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Winningham of Jack sonville. The wedding will be in the near future. The bride-to-be attended school in Central Point and for the past few years has been employed at Bear Creek orchards. Mr. Winningham has returrlfd to the valley after having spent four years with the United States navy. Of Interest here is news of the engagement of Miss Irene Louise Olsen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Antone Olsen of Puget Sound, Wash., to Theodore Delbert Sid well, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Sidwell of Kelso and formerly of Medford. The announcement was made at a recent party in Seattle. An early spring wedding is planned. Gold Hill Mr. and Mrs. John M. Cogswell announce the en gagement of their daughter, Jo anna Joy, to Richard Wilson Ab bott, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. Howard Abbott, Hamilton Lane, Grants Pass, Ore. Miss Cogswell is a junior in the Grants Pass high school and before goins to Grants Pass to reside, was a student in the Gold Hill high school. Mr. Abbott was a graduate of the Grants Pass high school in the class of 1946 and later attended La Verne college. He is now employed by Engler-Huson company of Grants Pass.
