Jan. 28 Don' take this Eagle Point high bas ketball team lightly for it has park, fire and a deceptive type of offense in which it is hard to know just where the ball is go ing to be or where a shot will come from. Klamath Falls may have de feated the Eagles 44 lo z lasi Friday night but the Eagles cave the taller and smoother working Pels a good lesson in ball-stealing and driving offense for the first and much of the third quarter. Bebounds Controlled Superiority under the two bas kets all the evening with the Pels getting 99 per cent of the rebounds helped them to victory. The fact the Eagles scored but one point in the second quarter to 1U lor ruamain aiaea bisu. ' Eagle Point took the lead In Iirst quarter wnen i-bv onu ins and Dick Mulhollen sank free throws with two minutes plaved but that was the only time the Eagles led. The score read but 9 to 7 for the Pels at the end of the first quarter, how- ever. Klamath led 19 to 8 at the half, 30 to 17 at the third period whistle and 36 to 24 at the auto matic timeout. Simmons Sparks Simmons not only was high point man for the team coached by Shirley Callaghan but also sparked the Eagles all the eve ning and proved a tricky ball handler. Loss of Mulhollen and Lloyd Hale via the five-foul route hurt late in the fourth miartor the Eaeles chances. Medco and Butte Falls are rated two of the better teams in the league. Out of town AAU basketball games tomorrow will send Green's confectionery to Pros pect's gym. The local store team is undefeated in all league games played to date this season but may run up against a tough foe Monday. Basketball fans were remind ed that no admission is charged for AAU games at the Junior high but the "hat is passed. Out of town games admission is smoll. Tiger Junior Team Winner Eagle Point, Jan 28 Medford junior classmen who play on the senior high school's Tiger Cubs basketball team were celebrating a victory over an outclassed Eagle Point junior varsity quin tet Saturday morning. The youths coached by Bob Newland made it one victory and one loss Friday" night by walloping the Eagles jayvees 69 to 27 as a prelim to the Klamath Eagle Point varsity tilt. Only members of the Tornado school's junior class played. Medford's boys started out weak but rallied in the final half to pull out an easy victory. The score was tied 13 to 13 at the first quarter whistle, Med ford led 27 to 18 at the half and the visitors were ahead 51 to 21 at the third quarter. A prelim at 7 p.m. will precede this. Friday night the Phoenix Pi rates had more than a little trou ble in subduing a stubborn St, Mary's high quintet 45 to 32 on the Phoenix floor in a conference tussle. At least once the Crusaders from Medford were behind by only two points and even so Phoenix led but 7 to 3 at the first quarter, 18 to 7 at the half and but 25 to 21 at the third quarter. Roosevelt Grade School In Lead Roosevelt school cagers are leading the varsity coniDetition and Washington and Roosevelt are tied for top spot in junior varsity games played to date in the Medford grade school league, Athletic Director Lee Ragsdale said Saturday. In the varsity loop Roosevelt has won three and lost none, Lincoln has two wins and a sin gle defeat, Washington has taken one win and two losses and Jack son has lost three. Junior varsity standings show Washington and Roosevelt tied with two victories and one defeat while Lincoln and Jackson are tied for third with one win and two losses. Anderson Quits Job At Iowa U. Clark Roberts Manager Senator Hotel Salem, Ore., Jan. 28 (U.R) H. Clark Roberts has been nam ed manager of the Senator hotel here to succeed the late Cedric Reaney, W. W. Chadwick, owner of the Chadwick hotel system, announced today. Roberts had been assistant manager of the Senator. Except for his World War II service he has been on the staff of the Sena tor for 20 years. Chadwick announced that Mrs Cedric Reaney will be his assist ant in the management ot me hotel svstem. which includes the Jackson hotel in Medford. . Near Cuttack. India, in an old fort was recently discovered decomposed rice mixed with earth, stated to date back to the 11th century. Rice being the staple food, it was customary to store it within the fort to tide over emergencies. College Athletes Ok'd For Softball Playing Chicago. Jan. 28 XU.R) The National Collegiate Athletic as sociation has approved a new set of rules wnicn permit college athletes to play on National Softball congress teams without loss of collegiate eligibility. The new rules, however, spec ify that the athletes may partici pate only in tournaments and competitions approved by the NCAA. The collegiate group maae it clear tnat tne regula tions of certain individual con ferences might run counter to NCAA rules and students would be barred from competing in them. He rose to fame for his hitting j feats with the House of uavm baseball team. Death was attrib uted to a heart attack. Cavemen Tip Pointer Five Central Point. Jan. 28 Grants Pass high romped over Central Point 81 to 38 at Grants Pass on Friday night in a Southern Ore gon conference hoop game that was fairly evenlv contested after the first period. The Cavemen honned to a 17 to 5 advantage at the first quar ter and were ahead 32 to 17 at the halfway point. Third period count was 48 to 28. Buster Fen- ner and Ford of the victors were high scorers and Merle Anhorn swished 11 for the Pointers. Anhorn was the Pointer king pin in the first half, scoring all his tallies in that time and show ing up on defense as well as of fense. It was the fifth conference loss for Central Point which has yet to register in the loop's win col umn. January 29, 1950 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THRE1 Ducks Upset Huskies Eugene, Ore., Jan. 28 ;U.R) The University of Oregon's un derdog Ducks upset the Univer sity of Washington's northern division leading Huskies, 57-49, last night in a basketball game before 5,129 McArthur court fans. It was the Webfoots' second win of the season against four setbacks and the second defeat of Washington in seven starts. Forward Paul Sowers' one hander shots broke a 17-all tie in the first half to give Oregon a lead it kept. Chico Edges Raiders Five Score 50-46 Ashland, Jan. 28 Southern Oregon college basketball team drooped its first Far Western conference game of the 1949-50 season Friday night when Chico State edged the Red Raiders 50 to 48 on the local college floor. Captain Keith Wade of the Raiders did just about everything but win the game for SOC and he sliced in 32 points or near ly three-quarters of the points the Raiders made. His generally superb play as well as scoring helped keep SOC in the thick of the battle. It was a fast game in which the decision could have gone cither way. Chico State led at the half 29 to 25.
