The presentations were made during a luncheon at the Holland hotel sponsored by the Jackson county Chamber of Commerce. "These loyal, faithful and pat riotic men performed a task de void of glamour, and even of ap proval," the governor said, "and performed it well. I am confi dent that when history is written about World War II special space will be set aside for the men of the selective service boards. 1 officially extend the grateful thanks of all Oregon to them." Work Not Ended The governor pointed out that presentation of the awards, however, did not end the work of the boards which have also been officially charged with the welfare of returning veterans. He discussed the three main problems which face board mem bers, officials, and all citizens, staling tney mainly were unem ployment, housing and educa tion. I Housing problems are being attacked on all levels. Gov. Snell said, and commended Ore gon cities, including Medford. I for their efforts to house veter ans. In spite of expansion of educational facilities, he stated I it was feared some 5,000 veter 'ans would be turned away from institutions of higher learning next fall if other facilities were not provided. Veterans are not looking for "doles or handouts," the gov ernor declared, but only an op portunity to work, to further j their education or to own a nome or a tarm. xne least we can do is provide them with an opportunity for security," the governor added. Medals Presented Gov. Snell personally pinned the bronze medals on the hon ored men. Guy Applewhite of Ashland responded for the selec tive service members, thanking the state office and county em ployers and citizens for their co operation during the difficult war days. Preceding the governor's talk Col. Elmer V. Wooton, head of the Oregon selective service system, stated that Oregon's 57 boards had handled the records of 263,000 men of military age with 140,000 men and women, or 53 per cent of this number, going into service. Board mem bers, faced with the decision of saying which were more useful at home than in the service, ap plied "common sense methods" to their task with such success that Oregon's production actu ally increased even in the face of the manpower losses, Col. Wooton declared. 1 101 Still Serving Col. Wooton said that out of the 171 original selective service board members, 101 are still serving after five years, 15 died in office, "as much war casual ties as if they had been killed in battle" and the remainder had resigned to enter the service, because of health or because they had left their communities. Receiving awards were Guy T. Applewhite, chairman, Jack son county board No. 1, Henry Niedermeyer, secretary of board 1, Walter J. Looker, appeal agent and H. H. Gillette, mem ber; Ernest L. Scott, chairman of board 2, Roy Pruitt, secretary, G. W. Neilson, appeal agent, and D. L. Flynn, William Hammett and Leon B. Haskins, members of board 2. Josephine county men named for awards were James T. Chin nock, chairman, W. T. Miller, appeal agent, and E. W. Hughes, former member. Named from Curry county were Phil R. Adams, secretary, William H. Caughell, member, Herbert R. Dewart, appeal agent, and George R. Dickinson, chairman of the board. William H. Fluhrer, president of the Chamber of commerce, in troduced the governor and Col. Wooton as well as a number of city and county officials and other guests. During his talk Gov. Snell had praised Col.
