The individ ual animal or man confront ed with a dan gerous adver- Dr. Brady sary or an un familiar situation that may be dangerous may either become angry and fight or try to remove or destroy the menace or seek safety in flight. This is the prim itive physiology of the subject Even though the cultured man or woman remains apparently unruffled and impassive under vexatious circumstances where a lowbrow would bawl you out or maybe try to knock your block off the impassive one is by no means as calm and cool as he or she pretends to be. Invariably the heart beats harder, the blood pressure rises and the entire body machinery speeds up in preparation for the natural re action to the emotion fight or flight. This racing of the engine uses up some of the energy mobilized by the emotion (increased adren- in, increased oxidation of blood sugar) but hardly enough to blow off steam. If the situation does not jus tify physical combat or action and docs not permit immediate flight, then the man or woman who has to preserve a tranquil demeanor under all circum stances has constant need for some form of vicarious outlet for this mobilized energy some kind of play, work or exercise every day, by way of recreation, relaxation and rest. He or she must DO SOMETHING, some thing fairly strenuous, some thing that will make him or her actually a little tired. If one can manage to get tired, not too tired, but just a little tired ev ery day one will save much of the wear and tear to which the body machinery is subjected by these everyday emotions to which it is l.ot permissablc to react in the natural way. The wear and tear is not so much on '.he nervous system, by the way. It affects chiefly the circulatory system, the heart and arteries. Most so-called "nervous breakdowns" .are in reality cardio-vascular degener ation or disease heart and ar tery wearing out. A good many brain workers or white collar or professional or business people have learned that they sleep better If they take a good walk every day or every night, whenever it may be convenient.
