Newspaper Page TextAG T L House Appropriations Com mittee Restores $43 Mil lion for Soil Conservation. Washington, Feb. 27 (U.R The house appropriations com mittee today recommended a $1,- 102,000,000 agriculture depart ment outlay for fiscal 1947 after lambasting its major research bureau for engaging in social studies and suggesting lower cot ton prices. The committee aimed the re buke at the bureau of agricul tural economics for activities be yond the "bounds of functions" Intended by congress. It cut the bureau's appropriation sharply. At the same time the commit tee restored a proposed budget cut of $43,000,000 in soil con tervation payments to farmers. The action was taken after Sec retary of Agriculture Clinton P. Anderson warned that farmers might lose faith in the depart ment if it did not fulfill its prom lses. $40 Million Less The total amount approved for the department to carry on its work during the year ending June 30, 1947, was $74,000,000 more than the appropriation for the current fiscal year. It was $40,000,000 less, however, than the total recommended by the budget bureau. The Increases approved over last year reflected largely the committee's desire to enlarge services that were curtailed dur ing the war. These include soil conservation, forest development and preservation, disease con trol and agricultural research. In addition to $300,000,000 for the land conservation program the bill, as approved by the com mittee and placed before the house, included the following ap propriations within the depart ment: Aid Extension Service Bureau of agricultural eco nomics, $4,031,000; extension service, $28,479,000; agricultur al research administration, bu reau of animal industry, $19 118.000; bureau of plant lndus- PEAR TREES We have a small surplus In Bartlett pur, prune, apple, and cherry trees fine well rooted stock. TRAINING FAVORED FOR YOUTH OF U.S. IETINGJEvEALS A majority of voters attending r meeting of the Council of Ore gon Republican Women last night favored some type of mili tary training for youth of the land, but not necessarily com pulsory training. A poll was tak er following piesentation of both affirmative and negative mater ial on the question and the re sults will be added to a state wide poll being taken by the council. Affirmative material was pre sented by Frank Van Dyke, Ash land attorney and legislator, from a paper written by Lt. Quincy Scott, and O. H. Bengt son, Medford attorney and mem ber of the state legislature, read negative material prepared by Mrs. John Y. Richardson of Port land. Mrs. F. O. Northrup, president of the- council, spoke briefly urging that Republicans work to make the party more effective in these times of need, and now ard, Gault, county sheriff, read a news article on the present po litical conditions in Russia. Miss Hoppe winning in the senior high school division and Miss Sether in the junior high school division. Claire Cordier won second prize in senior high school entrants and Sally Cooney won second for the junior divi sion. Honorable mention went to Bob Stevens, Shirley Tuffs and Charity Williams for senior high school and to Shirley Hutchin son, Maxine Falwell and Suz anne Singleton for junior high school. Prises Presented Prizes of $5 for first place and $2 for second place were pre sented at the schools today and the first prize essays will be entered in the state contest. State winners are to be forward ed to Indianapolis for entry in the national contest. Judges for thj Medford con test were Herb Grey, Mrs. Moore Hamilton, Elno Hemmila. Gordon Gilmore and Seth Bullis, Sr. In Ashland Virginia Lilly of Junior high school was declared first prize winner and Peggie Taylor, eighth grader, won sec ond place and Shirlee Newbry, third.
