He will take over his new duties next fall. During his two seasons as foot ball coach of the Medford Black Tornado, his teams have won 19 games and lost one. In 1944 he won the state high school cham-! pionshlp, taking 10 straight vic tories which was topped Dy a 14-0 defeat of LaGrande for the title. Last season his team won nine straight games, only to lose a 7 to 8 decision to Grant of Port land In the semi-finals of the state champlo.ishlp playoff. 43 Hoop Wins Simpson has rolled up a rec ord of 43 basketball wins and eight losses to date ir two sea sons here. The 29-year-old coach came here from Ashland where he guided the athletic destinies of the Grizzlies for one year, win ning seven football games and losing two and taking 21 basket ball victories against, eight de feats. His 1943-44 Ashland hlgn basketball team won the state championship. Served In Army Simpson's coaching career started at Ashland junior high here ht was athletic boss for three years. Principal stumbling blocks to settlemnt of the dispute were the horsemen's demand that no license be revoked without a hearing and that the board Issue a license for the next year to anyone in good standing at the close of the preceding year. No one had been denied a li cense without a hearing since he had been ot the board, Chair man Loyd Wright said, and any one whose license was not re newed at the start of the year could obtain a hearing. FOR mnn D Luur Garnering preliminary play off wins in tilts on the Medford high school court last night, Central Point and Hogue Fiver will battle on the same floor this evening for the Southern Oregon Class "B" league dia dem. . Tonight's victor will contend with Merrill in a Klamath county arena Saturday for the B" district five title. In the opening fracas of the play-off Central Point over whelmed Gold Hill 80-29. Start ing to click after the Beavers had run up a 7-6 first quarter lead, the Pointers romped to a 25-12 advantage at half-time. Milkowski of the losers was high point man with 19 while Hargus Colley and Les Hansen each sank 13 for Central Point. Rogue River nosed out Jack sonville 33-31. The Redskins, making it hot going all the way for the winners, were In front 15-14 at the half. Rogue River came back to take the long end of a 22-21 margin at the close of the third canto and lengthened the lead to 33-27 with two min utes left In the fray. Forty fouls, 21 on the Rogues and 19 on the Redskins were charged in the rough affair. Each team drop ped in 13 free tosses. The championship fight this evening should prove a hectic mix. Rogue River and Central Point split the two contests of their conference scries and, ex cept for the Rogues' height ad vantage, are evenly matched. The Pointers were drubbed by the Rogues In the 1945 play-off and will be out for revenge. Vieing for third place, Gold Hill and Jacksonville meet in the opening game at 7 o'clock. The 23-year-old cage star who Is currently leading the north ern division of the Pacific Coast conference with 185 points in 10 games, told the United Press by telephone from his home at Sumas, Wash., last night that the baseball offers "are too good to turn down." He said he had received of fers from the Philadelphia Phil lies, Chicago Cubs. St. Louis Cardinals and Detroit Tigers, and added that "as soon as I hear from the New York Yan kees and the Brooklyn Dodg ers, I'll know which team to sign with." Idaho meets Washington State, and Oregon State plays Oregon in the final contest of the regular season Saturday. The leaders are deadlocked with 10 wins and five losses. If both win Saturday, a playoff CONDITIONS SEEM DULL AT T P Conditions didn't look too bright out at the Medford high school basketball camp this morning when ft was reported that Don Waldron and. Earl Stelle had been added to the sick list. The list already includ ed Bob Watson, Jim Cave, Carl Reich and Jerry Ross. The sextet is "under the weather" with heavy chest colds which seem to be making the rnnnda nf the Tnrnurio ranks. and with the crucial Southern Oregon district playoff but two days away. Whether they would be able to play or whether Med ford's chances of winning would have to be on the shoulders of the second string, Coach Al Simpson was unable to say this morning. Ashland and Grants Pass are scheduled to open the tourna ment, taking to the Southern Oregon college court at Ashland at 7:30 p. m. Friday. Medford and Klamath Falls clash in the second game, starting about 8:30 or 8:45 p. m. Saturday night the winners get together for a berth in the state tournament at Sa lem March 13, 1.4, 15. and 16, and the losers battle it out for third place with Al Lightner of Salem and Chuck Schmidt of Eugene tooting the whistles both nights. ELKS COP INDEPENDENT BASKETBALL LOOP TITLE Ashland Elks clinched the Southern Oregon Independent league basketball championship last night by trampling the Med ford high Ramblers 92 to 42 at Ashland. Tonight the Elks battle Southern Oregon College, lead ers of the Rogue Villey league. in an exhibition tilt on the Ash land College floor. The prelim inary game features the SOC second team against St. Mary's of Medford. An estimated 1,000 general admis sion tickets will go on sale at the armory when the box office opens at 7 p. m., the promoter said, thus assuring early comers good scats. The general admis sion tickets will be sold on a first come, first served basis. Washington, Feb. 27 (U.R) The nomination of Julius A. Krug as secretary of interior appeared headed for senate ap proval today despite a notable lack of enthusiasm among west ern senators. Many prominent republicans and democrats joined in prais ing the public record of the 38 year old Wisconsin new dealer who headed the war production board during the final phase of World War II. Even among westerners there was acknowledgement of his ability. But they made no effort to hide their disappointment that President Truman didn't pick a man -from their own re gion. They wanted a man with intimate knowledge of the graz ing, mining. Irrigation and re clamation problems peculiar to the west. Sen. Wayne Morse, R., Ore., Called Krug "devoted public servant" who "stands in a class by himself compared to some of the appointments the presi dent has made recently." A lecture on Christian Science, entitled "Christian Science: The Religion of Reality," was given last evening at the Holly theatre by Paul A. Harsch, C.S.B. of Toledo, O., member of the Board of Lectureship of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass. The lecture follows in part: The year 1866 was deeply significant in world history. It brought to mankind the dis covery of Christian Science. In these United States it was also rich with promise, for there just had been brought to a close that specific effort of evil to destroy the unity of the states compris ing the Union, which we know as the Civil War. The signific ance of the coincidence of these two events should not be over looked. The Civil War years were most critical ones In our history. A New England thinker encour aging his fellows in that trying time wrote impressively. One of his poems may be found in the Christian Science Hymnal. In it he says. "Oft to every man and nation Comes the moment to decide, In the strife of Truth with false hood, For the good or evil side." Then, after referring to the fact that evil seems so often in the ascendant while truth is ob scured, he declares that ' . . . behind the dim unknown Standeth God within the shadow Keeping watch above His own." It was in that remarkable year of 1866 that the light of divine Truth came to Mary Baker Eddy and Illuminating "the dim un known" disclosed Deity to be in deed -an ever-present and avail able reality a constant protec tion and a divine inspiration. God was no longer "in the shadow." He now stood re vealed. The "Dim Unknown" Revealed It was in this light that men began to discern more clearly the truth about God and man Discerning and applying this truth has enabled them In in creasing numbers to live more wholesomely, happily, and joy ously. This enabling light of divine Truth was named by its Dis coverer Christian Science. - We have come together to consider this discovery, which we shall speak of as the religion of reality. Portland ' This religion of reality, this divine Science or Christian Sci ence, begins its corrective work at the point of Inception of mor tal discord. It shows where and how disease and inharmony orig inate and how they may be avoided or prevented. It is, therefore, a healing and preventive system. It should be stated at once, however, that the healing and preventing of physi cal Ills are by no means the whole of Christian Science or even its most important purpose. The healing of disease is the proof which Christian Science submits that it is the true and absolute plan of salvation for all humanity. A Universal Boon Because this Is all true, Chris tian Science may properly be called a universal boon. This is not to claim that sickness is uni versal and that all mortals are in need of physical healing, though no doubt it will be con ceded that all are in need of sal vation. Few indeed, however, are exempt from one or another of those disease-breeding condi tions, some of which have al ready been mentioned and which include fear, envy, distrust, tor menting lack, limitation, the be lief of separation, and so on. Unless the presence of these mental conditions is detected (and frequently they are hidden deep in the subconscious mind) and then destroyed, physical dis ease may and often does result. We shall consider some of these beliefs, their origin' and the necessity for casting them out of consciousness. The process of evicting such unwelcome tenants is explained simply and logically by Christian Science.
