Education Topic 4.0 SOC President At Meeting Here Speaking on how the war has affected the educational stand ards of women, Dr. Elmo Steven son, new president of the South ern Oregon college, addressed members of the Medford Branch. American Association of Uni versity Women, at the February meeting held at the home of Mrs. Justin Smith, 21 Geneva street, Wednesday night. Many women are now tak-i ing courses ir engineering and are very successful in this type of work, the educator said. Dr. Stevenson also stated that large numbers of returned serv icemen and women are availing themselves of the opportunity offered by the government to attend colleges all over the untry. These, on the whole, are making splendid students, he said, probably due to the fact that they now know what they want from education and fully appreciate the opportunity to pursue a higher education. Success Is Theme Of Club Program Given By Members "Successful Women" was the theme of the meeting of Med ford Business and Professional Women'! club held Thursday evening at the Holland Hotel, with Mrs. Clarence " Meeker , Miss Dana Platz, Mrs. Lulu Watson and Mrs. Ivah Murray on the program. Mrs. Meeker told of the car eers of six outstanding business and professional women of the nation, Miss Platz spoke on "what Is success", Mrs. Watson told of a number of successful women authors and Mrs. Mur ray's topic was "changing atti tudes of American women." George Maddox entertained with piano solos, with Mrs Maddox as his accompanist. During a business meeting a nominating committee compos ed of Mrs. Maurine Conger, Mrs. Dorothy Davidson and Miss Hazel Swayne, was an nounced. Guests of the club were Ellen Carter, LaVerne James, Eliza- i beth Settle, Voda Brower and LeOna Bestul. Members of the finance committee, including Margaret Morrison, chairman Lunetta Bussey, Blanch Canode and Ethel Tennant were in charge of the affair, and Ellen Carter had assisted by making place cards for the tables. Win ter jasmine sprays were used to decorate the dining tables. Junior " Y" Girls Entertain At Tea Junior Tri-Hi-Y girls enter tained their mothers and women teachers of the Junior High fac ulty with a Valentine's tea at the Y. M. C. A. club rooms. A profusion of red and white hearts supplemented with potted red flowers and candles made up the colorful decorations. Mrs. Vera Goode, leader of the club, and Lovelle Davies, president, pre sided at the tea table. They were assisted by Mrs. Ben H. Schmidt advisor. Members Present Program For Club Wednesday Study club mem bers heard an interesting pro gram at a meeting Feb. 20 at the Girls' Community club. Mrs. A. C. Leighton described the famous Biltmore house and gardens locattd at Biltmore, N. C. This property, built by George Vanderbilt 35 years ago as his home, has since been opened to the public as a museum. Mrs. Leighton's talk was particularly interesting since she had visited the place. Her description of the lovely gardens, the house and its famous and historical art treas ures was illustrated with photo graphs. The estate Is said to com prise 12,000 acres, with the house covering four acres. A review of "The Lost Moun tains" by Robert Orman and Virginia Cass was given by Mrs. Frances Cochran. This book about the Cascade mountains covers the geography, geology and history of the region and was written by two western peo ple who spent years in research. In the review, Mrs. Cochran gave particular attention to the early history of this region, speaking' of the hardships of the pioneers in reaching the western area of Oregon by way of the only break in the mountains, the Columbia river.
