fOOTTEEK MEDFOHO MAIL TRIBUNE friday, Feb. 22, IMS CONGRESS QUELLS EXTENSION PLANS OF WHITE HOUSE Washington, Feb. 22 flJ.R) Congress has caught the White House with its windows down. This embarrassing situation has to do with the elaborate plans for building an extension to the west wing of the White House. The extension was to have cost $1,600,000 and the funds had been authorized by congress. When detailed plans for the extension were announced, how ever, congress had a change of mind. Senators and representa tives did not like the Idea of altering the lines of the execu tive mansion and offices. Fixtures Torn Out Meanwhile, the work had been going on. Workmen tore out windows at one end of the west wing. Tliey knocked down a wall and they ripped up old steam pipes. They tore out lighting fixtures. Lorenzo S. Winslow, the White House architect, released sketches of the plans. The way Winslow explained things, the addition of such things as an auditorium, tele vision studios and a cafeteria to the west cn,l would cause no publicly .visible change In the White House. Funds Lacking To see the changes, he said, a person would have to rent a helicopter and get right over the White House. But congress had a different idea. The house withdrew an ap propriation. The senate followed suit. And Winslow was left witn no money for the project, no windows In a part of the west wing, and a lot of big clay mounds In the back yard. FIRST BATTALION FALLS IN SUNDAY Company A, 1st Battalion, local rifle unit of the Oregon State Guard will assemble Sun- day at the armory at 1 p.m. for the purpose of taking pictures of the unit for the state history of the Guard now being com piled, according to orders Issued by Capt. Oscar E. Sabln, unit commander. Luncheon will be served tjje men of the unit, with the Ash land American Legion Kilty Band as special guests. Bag pipers will "pipe the mess" In time-honored military style. More music will be provided by the Eve Prentice Accordiana Girls. The Special Service Detach ment of the company Is being alerted continuously during coming months, Capt, Sabln said, and Is available for service as firing squads at local mili tary funerals or general State Guard emergency duty.
