HOHT MTOFOKD MAIL TRIBUNE TUTTLE OFFERS FLIGHT TRAINING CHARTER TRIPS Shelby Tuttlo, 232 Valley View Drive, haa announced open ing of a Hying service at the Fairgrounds air park, located at the south city limits. Tuttle, who will call the business the Medford Air Service, has a new Piper Special 1946 model two- place cabin trainer. The owner said he would offer student in struction, charter and passenger flights and will have the dealer ship for Piper, Swift and Bal lanca aircraft. Tuttle, who Is a reserve offi cer in the air corps, was an in structor at Medford Municipal airport before the war and is a graduate of an RAF flying school and took airlines training at the Pennsylvania Central Air lines in Washington, D. C. Later the World War II Veteran was instructor in transition and in strument flying for various kinds of army craft. He flew planes to the European theater of operations and for a time was assistant director of instrument training at Memphis. His commercial license In' eludes all types of aircraft up to and Including the C-47 with instruction and instrument rat ing. Tuttle has been flying about Ti years and said he has about 2,300 hours flying time. Boy Scout News Cub Scouts of ' Pack 2 and their families enjoyed a pot luck dinner Feb. 7 at Lincoln School prepared and served by mothers of the Cubs. Atten dance was excellent at both the dinner and the regular monthly Pack meeting which followed, Tha following Cubs were pre sented with awards: Den one Donald Boyd, Rich ard Vance, Jerry Bessonetle, Jerry Eastgate, Jimmie Lillie, Ernest Rogers. Shady Cove Shady Cove. Feb. 11 After a fine day of sunshine Friday over an inch of snow- fell early Satur day. Logging and sawmill nnorallnna have been shut down several times the lasT two weeks due to snow. Shady Cove P.-T.A. will hold a card party Friday, Feb. 15, at p. m. at the Roguedale cafe Pinochle 'and other card games will, be played. All proceeds will go towards the school hot lunch program. Congratulations go out to Mr. and Mrs, McCroin on the arrival of a new daughter. They also have two boys. The McCrein's are recent settlers here, on the former Mason property. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Bliss, former residents, are planning to start construction soon of a resi dence on their property here. Mr. Bliss Is connected with the Cooper real estate firm in Med ford and they also operate sev eral apartments at their home on West 11th. SPAATZ TAKES OVER AIR FORCE Washington, Feb. 11 (U.R) Gen. Carl A. (Tooey) Spaatz, who directed the strategic bombing of Germany, took over command of the army air forces today irom lien. H. H. Arnold. Arnold, who commanded the air forces throughout World War II, will retire soon to the quiet Sonoma county, Calif., farm where he has threatened to shoot down any airplane that comes within range. Both men were pioneer fliers In the days when the army's air strength was a minor branch of the signal corps. Upper Rogue Adds $158 To Polio Fund The drive for polio funds In the Shady Cove to Prospect area netted -$138.49 of which $94.38 came from the dance sponsored by the Grange, $22 from the dime jars and $42.11 from contributions from school children. Mrs. Scgessenman, chairman for the campaign, In the area ex pressed thanks to all who help ed make the drive a success, especially the Upper Rogue Grange and the navy boys from Camp White who furnished music. Soldier Kin May Co To Japan May 1 Tokyo, Feb. 11 (U.R) Gen. Douglas MacArthur announced today that the Japanaese occu pation zone would be opened to army wives and families on or about May 1 and expressed hope that congress would provide free transportation for all ranks. Prospective immigrants were warned that living conditions In Japan at present were not "com parable to those in continental America." "Lucky" 1259th Celebrates Birthday at Camp White Camp White The "lucky" 1239th Engineer Combat batta lion, which chased the war half way around the world and suf fered no casualties except sea sickness and cuts from opening C-ration cans, celebrated its sec ond birthday at Camp White Sunday. The unit was activated at Camp Pickett, Virginia, Feb. 10, 1944. Instead of being the "fight Ingest" or the most decorated unit, the 1259th considers Itself probably the luckiest in the army because the men traveled 10.000 miles in searoh of battle without quite ever making it. Leaving New York port of embarkation the men took their luck to Europe for even as they Oakland, Calif., Feb. 11 (U.R) Probably only a quirk of fate prevented an Oakland police man from shooting his own nephew as a car thief suspect here early today when he and fellow officer pursued two teen-aged boys in a stolen car. Patrolmen Marshall F. Peter son and Frank J. Curran spot ted the two boys in a car which had been reported stolen and finally forced them to the curb after a wild chase. When the boys jumped from the car and fled on foot officer Peterson chased one while Cur ran raced after the other. Peter son returned to the car after failing to catch the boy and found that Officer Curran had wounded and captured the other youth who was Peter sons own nephew. COYOTE POISON OUT IN DEAD INDIAN AREA Poison will be put out for coyotes Wednesday in section 13, township 37 3 E, three-quarters mile north of Dead Indian Re sort, according to John Walch, rancher of the Lake Creek area. The region is known as the East Powder spring to all stockmen, Walch said. Persons in the area are asked to keep dogs and live stock away from the region where the poison is to be dis tributed. Then they were alerted for shipment to the Paci- fic but while at the Marseille staging area that conflict ended and the engineers came home from. Camp Lucky Strike, Nor mandy. From this camp, by the way, it was easy to see the in teresting sights of LaHavre, Rowen and Dieppe, to say noth ing of Paris. The men were even lucky dur ing training, having been sta tioned at a camp convenient to Palm Beach and Miami, Fla., after activation to infantry and engineering tactics. Under re cent War department rulings, the majority of the original per sonnel of the outfit will return to civilian life by summer. Carol Drake Heads Safeway Department Of Home Economics Carol Drake will be the new name of the director of the home economics department of Safeway Stores, Inc., according to an announcement by the re tail grocery concern. The new director's services will be offer ed through the Homemakers' Bureau which has been Safe way's department for testing commodities and developing menus for 15 years. Carol Drakes home econo mics advice will result from testing and experimenting by 15 professional home economics authorities under the direction of Julia P. Hindley, well known in the Northwest. Prior to the announcement of the new name of Carol Drake as director of the Homemakers Bureau. Safeway home econo mics ooeration was conducted under the name of Julia Lee Wright, a name used jointly with Family Circle magazine, Julia Lee Wright will continue as foods editor of Family Circle, Junior Trl-Y Club The Junior High school Tri-Y club of the Y.M.C.A. held a pot- luck dinner Thursday at the "Y" club rooms, with each mem ber bringing a contribution for the meal. Mr. and Mrs. Locher and their 4-year-old son, Donald, were slightly burned. An 18-month-old baby was left unharmed. The dead, reported by Deputy Sheriff Lou Johnson, were Ar lene Helen, 7; Henry Walter, 6; Virginia, 4, and Carroll Locher 3. A seventh child, a daughter, was in Spokane when the blaze broke out. Deputy Johnson said that as far as he could learn the fire was caused by an overheated stove. Western Union Help Ends Strike Today New York, Feb. 11 (U.R) Some 7,000 Western Union Tele graph company employees voted unanimously Saturday to submit their grievances to a court ap pointed arbitrator and return to work Monday at 12:01 a. m., ending a 33-day strike. Columbus, O., Feb. 9 (U.R) Ohio State blew a 12 point lead and was forced into a hair-raising v''er-time period before de feating Indiana, 53 to 52, here tonight in a Big Ten basketball encounter.
