Elks Grab First Place In League Ashland, Feb, 6 Ashland Elks took over undisputed first place in the Southern Oregon independent basketball league when they took a 62 to 42 vic tory from Camp White Naval Hospital here last night. Score at halftlme favored the Elks 29 to 19. Wes Peters was high point man with 21 counters and Kluba led the Navy with 18. Medford Hotel and Groceteria Gold Ban, scheduled for a league tilt here last night, will play at a later date. The Gold Ban were short a player and the Hotel squad decided to play off at 9 future date rather than to take a forfeit. Jacksonville, with three wins and two defeats, is being pressed by Phoenix, Gold Hill and Butte Falls, all tied for second place with two wins and two loses. Prospect brings up the rear with a win and three defeats. Jack sonville, with a bye Friday, is certain to be tied for first place after week-end games. Gold Hill goes to Butte Falls and Phoenix moves to Prospect. The "game of the year" in di vision two will be at Rogue Riv er Friday night when the lead ing Pointers go against the Rogues. If Rogue River can come through with a win It will knot first place in the loop but If they lose Central Point is practically a cinch to grab the crown. Is no longer a member of the Oregon state game com mission, he snld today. Denman explained that he was appointed to fill the vacancy created when Kenneth Martin of Grants Pass took a leave of absence to Join the navy. Martin, former representative to the state legislature from Jose phine county, has been discharg ed from the navy and will as sume the position, Denman said. Bodies were removed by dog sled from deso late scene of the crash. Tornado Bows to To Face K. Falls Oregon State Rooks took a 41 to 40 win from the Medford high school Black Tornado at Corvallis last night. The win evened the- series between the two squads, Medford squeezing out a 50 to 49 win here Jan. 19. The Tornado will return to Medford today and settle down for a tough week-end when they play Klamath Falls in a conference clash here Friday night and tangle with the Oak land Boys Club here Saturday night. Medford is on top of the Southern Oregon league with four wins and no defeats, hav ing licked the Pelicans and Ash land once each and Grants Pass twice. Klamath Falls is always one of the most dangerous foes of Medford supremecy in the league and their 52 to 26 shell acking of Ashland last Saturday night indicates they are in top shape for the coming; encounter. Legion Hoop Crew Slates Game Central Point, Feb. 6 Going Into their initial action the new ly, organized American Legion hoop five will contend with the strong Rogue River Chinooks on the high school court here to morrow evening. Game time is 8 o'clock. Former Central Point high school players and war vets for the most part make up the local quint. Ken Beebc. Ron Pinkham, Lome Webster and Dale Child ress are four standouts on the squad. PENDLETON HOSPITAL BUILDING PLAN VOTED T5alem, Feb. 6 Plans for the proposed admission building at the eastern Oregon state hospi tal, Pendleton, cslimated to cost approximately $400,000, were approved by the state board of control at a meeting here Tues day. The plans were prepared by Leslie Howell, Portland archi tect. The structure will be 340 by 107 feet with a capacity of ap proximately 114 beds. It will be of fireproof construction. But not here In the Pacific coast area. Here, many vegetables re main in the ground all winter, to be harvested as needed. Our own present garden sup plies us with seven varieties of vegetables. Many farmers have an even greater number from which to choose. Experimenting with several kinds of cabbage, I am better pleased with the Savoy than any other. Not only Is It very little affected by our light frosts but It retains a crispness lacking in the smooth leaved varieties. So far, neither cows nor horses bother the cabbages or turnips. And goodness knows they have had plenty of opportunity to do so, getting in as often as they do. Jerry, the horse, on being dis covered in the garden, shows an historinic ability which would take him far, did he have stage ambitions. First, he registers delighted surprise at my appear ance and comes to meet me, his lips spilling partially munched carrots.
