Newspaper Page TextF Y FORT TO CLOSE Laredo, Tex. U.fO Historic Fort Mcintosh, an army post for nearly 100 years, is going to be closed. An old frontier fort, built near this Mexican border city just after the Mexican War In 1849, It was occupied first by a com pany of Texas Mounted Volun teers, commanded by Capt. Mira beau B. Lamar, second president of the Republic of Texas, which had become a state four years earlier. The oost originally was named Camp Crawford, but was renam ed In honor of Lt. Col. James S. Mcintosh, who, died of wounds luffered at the battle of Molino del Rey. When the Civil War started. Federal troops left the fort and it was taken over by the state for the Southern Confederacy. Texas men wearing the gray of the south successfully defended Fort Mcintosh against Union troops. After the war, U. S. cavalry again took over the fort and it has been garrisoned continuous ly since 1865, although authoriz ed strength at "the post was only 10 officers and 54 enlisted men at the time of the order to end Its service. Fort Mcintosh was the only army post in Texas during World War II w'thout a prisoner-of-war stockade. Frost as the result of an auto accident on the Klamath Falls-Ashland high way last October 26. Kerr sets forth in the action that his son, Glenn O. Kerr, was driving the auto, and in attempt ing to pass Frost's pickup truck, was forced off the road, damag ing the car. It is alleged Frost was driving his pickup in a care less, reckless, and negligent manner, and not staying on his own side of the road. Cobra Venom Used As Substitute For Morphine In War Manila (U.R) Next time you need relief from pain, don't ask for morphine, because it's habit-forming. Ask for cobra venom. That is the recommendation of T3 George Turney, Highland Park, Mich., who held the uni que job of cobra tender at the University of the Philippines. Turney, who recently passed through the 21st Replacement Depot en route home and a dis charge, said another advantage of cobra venom as anesthetic is that the effect lasts several days. The guerrilla forces used the cobra venom as substitute for morphine during the war. The venom has since been used ex perimentally at the state univer sity. During his tenure as custodian of the reptiles. Turney collected an estimated $37,000 worth of venom. Soldier Memorial To Honor Heroes Of World War II Semmes. Ala. OJ.R) This little farming community Isn't talking of erecting a memorial to the heroes of World War II they are doing something about lt. It Is a recreation park and playground being erected by the First Baptist Church here to be known as the Semmes Baptist Church Memorial Park and dedicated to those who served In th- second world war. The memorial is the Idea of the Rev. L. J Chambllss, pastor of the church who believes the "church should be the center of all community social life. The combined playground and park is already under construc tion and will be in operation within a few months. What's Doing at U. S. O. Beginning next Mon day, slow signs will be erected, and a junior police officer sta tioned by each, to call attention of motorists to the signs and the yellow markings. Caution marks are also painted. Oak Grove school authorities report the school children will start crossing the highway be tween 2:45 and 4:30 p.m. daily. They will have leaders. Sheriff Howard Gault today urged autoists to heed the signs and slow down. The Howard school and other schools of the county plan sim ilar measures as a safety step, the sheriff further reported. "Victory Girl" Is Continued Problem In San Diego Area San Diego, Cal. (U.R) The "Victory Girl" or patriotute Is still an unsolved problem with victory, according to social wel fare director Alvin G. Rowe. "She wll continue to be a casualty of the postwar era," Rowe said. "Delinquent girls un der 18 have come to San Diego In ever-increasing numbers since 1940 and the influx is still on." Admitting "there are not facilities for handling their case adequately in San Diego," Rowe said more than 60 per cent of the juvenile girls arrested had venereal diseases. Chains Needed On Siskiyou Highway State police officers said this morning that the Siskiyou high way into California is still slip pery and chains are needed for safe travel. Additional snowfall last night is packed on the roadway mak ing travel exceptionally danger ous, police said. Only those having Important business were advised to attempt to negotiate the slippery highway. OPA TIMBER CEILINGS 0KEH ON PUBLIC LAND Washington, Feb. 5 (U.R) The Supreme court today upheld the right of the OPA to set ceil ing prices on timber sold from public lands of a state. The seven to one ruling came in an opinion read by Justice Hugo L. Black. The court reviewed an appeal by Otto A.
