King, 93, of Phoe nix, who passed away January 28 in San Diego, Calif., as the result of a fall. Interment will be lh Jacksonville cemetery. Mrs. King and her daughter, Mrs. D. M. Watt, also of Phoe nix, were visiting at the home of her grandson, Harvey K. Watt in San Diego when the end came Mrs. King, born in New Rich mond, Ohio, December 30, 1852 went to California with her par ents in 1837 traveling by boat from New York to the Isthmus of Panama, then continuing by boat to San Francisco, by stage to Sawyers Bar, Calif., then by mule train to the south fork of the Salmon river where her fath er, Arron Short, operated the hotel. After her father's death, the family moved to Sawyers Bur where the children attended school and later to Jacksonville, where she met George A. King a pioneer stage driver. They were married In 1872. To this union were born two children, the late George W. King, of Phoenix, and Mrs. Watt. Other surviving relatives are: Nephew, Dr. Charles L. Harvey Martinez, Calif.; nieces, Mrs. Ray A. Whlddcn and Dorothy Whld- den, of San Mateo, Calif.; grand children, Silas F. King, Portland Mrs. W. G. Miksche, Portland and Mr. Watt, of San Diego; great grandchildren, Mary Ann King. George W. King and San dra Miksche, all of Portland, Balancing Canine Carries 14 Foot Poles Across Back "Stub," four-year-old terrier belonging to Roy Vamer, dis dains to play with small sticks like other dogs. Instead, Stub balances long poles across his back, working at the game until he gets the pole just In the right spot to balance. Varner proves his story by dis playing two pictures of the dog, carrying long poles across his back, one of the poles measur ing about 14 feet. The dog, own ed by Varner since small pun, always showed more than usual interest In playing with sticks, according to his owner, and eventually learned the trick of carrying the poles. Stub Is part terrier and part bull dog. Varner, who lives at Route 4, Box 301A, is quite sure Stub Is the only amateur pole-balancing dog In the nation. Honorably discharged veterans of the armed forces and merch ant marine are granted an age waiver to their 24th birthday and allowed five points addition al on competitive entrance ex aminations. - Applications should be made directly to the District Super visor, U. S. Merchant Marine Cadet Corps, Training Organiza tion, War Shipping Administra tion, 262 California St., San Francisco, Calif., before March 1, 1848, for the next competitive test to be held April 3, 1948. Oregon Democrats To Outline Plans Bend, Feb. 1 (U.W Oregon democratic committeemen will meet lit Bend tomorrow and Sat urday to outline campaign plans for tho May primary election.
