PIERCY TO BUILD NEAR CITY L Construction of a new 70 acre airport on Highway 99, one mile north of Medford, will be gin in the next few days, it has been announced. Ernest Piercy, veteran pilot and former RAF Instructor, has purchased the acreage, a por tion of the Skelton property. and is completing plans to build a modern all-purpose airfield to serve flying enthusiasts of the valley. The new civilian air-center, already approved and designat ed by the Civil Aeronautics Authority as "Piercy's Field will offer two runways, each over a half mile long, refueling and hanger facilities and a com pletely equipped aircraft and engine repair depot. Piercy, who will supervise flight instruction, rental of air craft and sales of poplar makes of private planes, has spent the past eight months In a survey of the valley area seeking an airport site so located as to be accessible to the greatest num ber of vallev residents. The location on Highwav 99, accord ing to Piercy, fulfills these re- c-ilrements in addition to being situated in such a manner that It will be easily located by pri vate plane tourists. Piercy served during the war as a civilian instructor in the advanced flying school of the RAF in Arizona and is a rated CAA flight instructor and flight examiner. Frank Rogers, city superin tendent, said the new field will In no way affect the city's tem porary landing strip at the Fair grounds nor will it affect the city airport on Midway road when It is returned to the city by the army. The weapons, known as gor gon, gargoyle and glomb, were pilot-less aircraft, capable ' of speeds of more than 500 miles an hour under a radio control. They were built and tested in the past two years. The gorgon, designed to car ry 100 pounds of explosives in its nose, is a Jet-propelled mis sile which can be directed to its target by radio control, or by its own automatic target seeking device after release from a mother plane. The gargoyle, also Jet-propel-led, carries a 1,000-pound armor-piercing bomb, control led visually by radio when re leased from the fuselage of a fighter plane. It can attain a top speed of 700 miles an hour in a dive on the target. The glomb. or glider bomb, can carry 4,000 pounds .of ex plosives. It Is towed by a fighter plane or patrol bomber and automatically released from the tow-plane by radio-control. The bomb has a television transmit ter in Its nose which permits the flier to guide it to a target when the pilot Is not on the line of sight. Four Leaf Clovers Insure Lady Luck Long Beach, Cal.
