Porter, 31, Medford Or., accused of stealing $300 from a La Verne, Cal., home where ha wai a guest last Oct. 1, returned to Jail today In lieu at S10.000 ball. Mn. Josephine Lopei, the complainant, testified Porter was brought to her home by her brother. John Martin. Porter surrendered to Seattle police two weeks after the theft. He told authorities he found the money under a sofa cushion when he prepared to conceal his own possessions before retiring Porter's application for proba tion hearing was set for Feb. 5. State police said a Floyd E Porter, living at 19 Rose street at the time, reported on Oct. 19, 1944. that two soldiers held him up and took $60 from him while ha was driving a laxicao ior local company. Sheriff's officers said Porter was sentenced to two years In the Oregon state penitentiary In October, 1936, for the theft of $75 from a service station on the Jacksonville highway. Sheriff's records show he was picked up here twice for vagrancy and was wanted In Grant Pass in Feb ruary, 194S, for auto theft. . A musical program was pre sented by Eve I'rentlce' Accnrdl ! ana Girls following the business i session and refreshments were i served. airaliht Hour bo n OF E DEATH RECEIVED Official confirmation of the death of her son, Wesley Wayne Stringer, 25, at the hands of the Japanese on Wake Island has been received by Mrs. Lena M. Foster, Medford. It is under stood that young Stringer, a civilian worker for Morrison and Knudson Contracting com pany on the Island, was one of 98 men shot by the Japanese Oct. 7, 1943. Stringer arrived on Wake in June of 1941 and the lest let ters from him were received in December of that year. Mrs. Foster reports that during inves tigation of the death of the men it was learned that the officer who ordered their death stated "he feared the men were about to revolt." The deceased was born and reared near Grants Pass, was graduated from the Grants Pass high school and later worked as a janitor for various schools of that city. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors are his mother, two sisters, Mrs. Vada Middleton of Lakevicw, Ore., and Mrs. Thcl ma Lininger of Ashland, and one brother, Technician Fifth Grade Calvin Stringer who is with the Third Engineers now in Okaya ma, Japan.
