MERKEL RELATES AT A vivid description of the gallant stand at Corregldor was given the Medford Rotary club Tuesday by Major Emil Merkel, brother of Dr. A. E. Merkel, county health officer here, In a luncheon address at the Hotel Medford. Major Merkel was a mortar battery commander and medical officer during the final stand at the fortress and was a prisoner of the Japanese during remainder of the war. When war was Imminent the officers at Corregldor realized that they were expendable and "were not surprised when they became guests of the Emperor," the major said. The first air raid on the rock fortress occurred December 29, 1941 with 170 casualties among the 8,000 Americans and 10,000 Philippine troops stationed on the Manila Bay island forts. Subsequent air raids claimed a much smaller toll. Finally, when General Mac Arthur left, the officers and men realized that hope of rescue was dim. When Bataan fell the Japs were able to bombard Corregi dor from three miles away on the mainland and the fixed guns of the fort, designed for sea de fense, could not be turned against them. Jap Loss Heavy On May 5, 1942 the Japs assaulted the Island with 6,000 troops of which only 200 surviv ed. When General Wainwright surrendered the fort conditions rapidly became almost unbear able for those who remained un der Jap control. Food was scarce and sanitation conditions criti cal. Major Merkel remained on Corregidor as one of two Ameri can medical officers to handle the work units under the Japa nese. He was then sent to var ious prison camps in the Philip pine Islands prior to transfer to Formosa. The brutal treatment of Americans was graphically described a prisoner policy which called for little to eat and on 1 lb. any brand of of itie "DFFRENT "k6cevea To Mrs. Housewife! Yes, It's true! Prison Ships Lost In the group of 12 ships which took Dr. Merkel and other prisoners to China and then to Formosa bat three ships surviv ed attacks by American sub marines and an aerial attack at Hong Kong. Many prisoners failed to survive the hardships of 39 days In the unsanitary holds of prison ships with star vation rations and little water. Major Merkel was Introduced by Dr. Merkel, and a sister, Lt. Marie Merkel, who served as an army nurse In Europe during the war, was 1 guest. Vice-President Morris Leonard was chair man of the luncheon meeting. BIRTHS TEDRICK To Mr. and Mrs. Irvin, 210 Laurel, Jan. 8, 1946, a girl, 4V4 pounds, at Sacred Heart hospital.
