A Joint police-district attor ney's office squad yesterday raided the exclusive Market street offices of Caldwell, arm ed with a second-degree murder warrant naming him In connec tion with the death Christmas day of Mrs. Signa Bredesen, San Francisco housewife. They found the offices empty of pa tients, nurses and the doctor. Special Agent Joseph Wil liams of the state medical board told the district attorney's of fice that Mrs. Viola Maltagliati, Woodland, Calif., who died about a year ago, gave a state ment to investigators prior to her death in which she said she submitted to an operation per formed by Caldwell, Williams did not say wheth er the operation was an abor tion. Police here said that the investigation of Caldwell had been in progress since Mrs. Bredesen died after a suspected visit to Caldwell's elaborately equipped establishment. Yesterday's raid was a part of a city-wide crackdown on establishments where illegal abortions allegedly are perform ed. Police said they were con templating raids against five other "abortion mills" as soon as "we have enough evidence." HELD TOO HASTY London, Jan. 5 U.R) Lt. Gen. Sir Frederick E. Morgan, : ousted operations chief of the ! United Nations relief and re- ; habilitation administration in Germany, has been summoned here to submit his resignation formally, a UNRRA official said today. Up to noon Frankfurt time today (6 a. m. EST), UNRRA of ficials in the German city said Morgan had not received notifi cation of his dismissal. A UNRRA spokesman announced here late today however, that a cable summoning Morgan had been sent this morning and that he has received it. Some British newspapers sug gested editorially that the UNRRA had acted too hastily in ousting Morgan without further hearing.
