BATTLE ROYAL TO START 1946 MAT A six-man battle royal will feature the first wrestling card of the local 1948 season, Promo ter Mack Lillard announced yesterday. Lillard said he had signed the cream of the coast's tough guys as well as some of the finest grapplers now appear ing in the west. Pete Belcas tro, the rugged Weed Italian, and Jack (Buck) Lipscomb, for mer coast champion, round out the list of uncouth muscle manglers scheduled for the free-for-all. Others in the melee will be Angelo Martlnelll, Herb Parks, and Gust Johnson. Three regulation matches will follow the battle royal with pairings to be decided in order of elimination. DIXON New Owner Let's Go ROLLER SKATING MEDFORD ARMORY TO Cards Get $175,000 Third Largest in History For Battery Star New York, Jan. 5 (U.F9 The New York Giants purchased catcher Walker Cooper from the St. Louis Cardinals for $175,000 tonight. It was the third larg est player cash transaction in baseball history. Cooper, 31 next Tuesday, was the outstanding catcher in the major leagues when he left the Cardinals to go into the navy shortly after the 1945 season started. Owner Horace Stone ham of the Giants expects him to be discharged in April. Only Joe Cronin, manager of the Boston Red Sox, and Dizzy Dean brought more money in the player market. Owner Tom Yawkey shelled out $250,000 and shortstop Lyn Lary to the Washington Senators for Cron in. The Chicago Cubs paid the Cardinals $187,000 for Dean, who developed a sore arm al most at once which forced his retirement from baseball. The sale of the hard-hitting catcher climaxed a busy day for the Cardinals for they also sold infielder Jimmy Brown to the Pittsburgh Pirates for an esti mated $30,000. In announcing the sale. Stone ham revealed that the Cardinals accepted the Giant offer they also had bids from the Philadel phia Phillies and Boston Braves because it was not contingent upon Cooper being discharged from the service. Stoneham said owner Sam Breadon of the Cardinals ad vised him that Cooper, who is stationed at Lambert Field, St. Louis, now has 31 points four short of the lower navy dis charge point score which went into effect today and expected his discharge in mid-April. . "I'm sure Cooper will help our pitching and be a steadying influence on our club," Stone ham commented. The deal broke up baseball's most famous brother combina tion. Pitcher Morton Cooper was sold to the Braves last spring shortly after Walker was inducted. They had spent their entire major league careers with the same club the Cardin als being vital factors in the three pennants and two world series which the Redbirds won in 1942, 1943 and 1944. Only in '43 did the Cardinals miss the world's title. Closing time for ntinday Tro lle ! to Classlly 4:00 Saturday afternoon.
