INFLAMMATIO The iris is the pigmented ring surrounding the black pupil or central dot of the eye. The iris of every hu man being is brown and no other color, ex cept in albi nos, persons of any race born with a defi ciency of pig ment in skin. 'A 101 hair and eyes ifl their irises look pink or ijsrMtM blue according Dr. Brady . to the angle of refraction. If the iris is most heavily pigmented the eyes look "black" to the casual observer; if les heavily pigmented, they look "brown"; if still less pig mented, they look "hazel", "gray", "green" etc.; and eyes only slightly pigmented look "blue". Now don't try to dis pute this with me. It is a mat ter of fact, and not my opinion or yours. My eyes, I have Ben Told, are green, yellow, or brin dled, but whenever I have to state the color of my eyes and hair (if any), for instance when applying for a license to drive a car on the public highway, I call everything "brown' and so far as the examiners can see it may be so. Anyway, if you guess anybody's eyes are "brown" you'll be right 99.44 of the time, wrong only if the in dividual happens to be an albi no. Contrary to the common ex pression that the pupils (central black dots) contract and dilate it is the Irises that contract and dilate the pupil being just the hole in the ring, through which light passes. The Iris or ring contracts, making the pupil or hole smal ler, when the light is strong. It dilates, making the pupil or hole larger, when the light is not so bright, and hence the pu pils are largest in a dim light or a dark place, smallest in a brightly lighted place. The iris works precisely as the shutter of a camera should work for a good photograph. The irises contract when the eyes regard an object a foot away, dilute when the eyes re gard anything at a considerable distance say when you gaze off at the horizon or beyond the horizon in a daydream. K OF THE IRIS dentally this is good for the eyes, particularly for eyes doing much close or near work to take your eyes off your work and look away to the horizon or beyond for a few moments every half hour or so if the boss isn't watching. It eases the strain, rests the eyes, relaxes tension, keeps blood pressure down, shoos off crowsfeet, and, for the boss's information in case he or she doesn't know, it in creases the speed and. accuracy of your work. Inflammation of ths Iris Is iritis. Further than to say that the redness of the eyes is most marked on the front of the eye ball close around the iris (color ring) in iritis, and actual pain in the eyes occurs with iritis, as distinguished from just smart ing, burning or irritation with the more familiar conjunctivi tis or inflammation of linings of eyelids, there is little I can tell about iritis here. All I know about iritis Is that you had bet ter consult an occulist that is, a physician who limits his prac tice to diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases. QUESTIONS ANSWERS chh-ken-or-Kgs?
