EIGHT MEDFOBD MAIL TRIBUNE ' Thursday De. 80, 1943 PHILIPPINES FACE Independence, Re Invest ment of Capital to Be Bi Questions Facing Islands By Chrli Cunningham United Press Correspondent Tokyo, Dec. 20 (U.PJ Philip pine independence as well as re investment of capital in the war ravaged islands' industries will be the biggest questions facing the Filipinos during the next few months. Committed McNutt told a press confer- em:e that the United States is committed to go through with its announced Intention of granting the Philippines her Independ ence, unless the door Is left open for a cha.iRe. He emphasized, however, that the initiative must come from the Filipinos and if there is a "spon taneous, uninspired request (for status quo) we probably would grant them the request. McNutt said it would be Jong time before the Philippines got back on their feet economic ally, pointing out that her ex ports and imports are virtually nil because of the lack of com munications and transportation lost during the war. Sugar 9 Years Away He said It would be at least three years before the Philip pines could again export sugar. In order to obtain necessary shipping, American ships would have to be declared surplus, and this has not yet been done, he added. McNutt has been conferring with Gen. Douglas MacArthur prior to leaving for Shanghai to confer with ucn. Aiuert J Wedemeyer, commander of American forces In China, re garding the Chinese colony In the Philippines. Methodist School Plana Christmas Exercises Friday The Church School of the Methodist Church, under leader ship of E. J. Neumann, superin tendent, will present their Christmas exercises Friday at 7:30 p. m., in the church audi torium. The program, as announced by Dr. Louis C. Klrby, pastor, will consist of attractive group numbers Including: "The Christ mas Story," by the Beginners; a pageant, by the Primary de partment; 'The Star Rays," by the Juniors; a pantomlne, by the Intermediates, and a chorus number, "The Infant Jesus," by the Seniors. Special violin num bers will be given by Richard Bishop of the Navy. Santa Onus will arrive on time with 430 bags of candy for the children, A welcome is ex tended to the public. The pro Kram committee Includes Mrs. Horace Doolen, Mrs. John Car ter and Mrs. Arlle Walker. CAROLS PLAYED FROM TALENT CHURCH BELFRY Talent, Dec. 20 Christmas carols are being played for the community from the belfry of the Talent Friends church. The public address system belonging to the Talent fire department is usd In broadcasting the music. The carols will continue to be heard this week between 5 and 6 p. m. San Francisco Is closer to Europe than New York Is to Asia. SHOPPING E CENTRAL PL PLANT Central Point, Dec. 20 Con struction of a large machinery warehouse and shop has been started by the Howard-Cooper Corporation of Portland on their property near the north city lim its here. The corporation, which handles industrial equipment, plans to have the building fin ished and open for business about the middle of February, states Ray Barnes of Medford who is sales representative for the flrm.'l Housed In the structure will be the company's branch office for Jackson and Josephine coun ties. Mr. Barnes will be in charge. Dimensions of the building will bo 50 by 100 feet. It will-be a concrete structure, with glass show windowr along the entire front. Offices and display room will be at the front of the build ing. Back of these will be the parts department and the rest of the structure will contain the shop. The corporation owns 300 feet of frontage, each, on the high way and rail road and will lay spur tracks and build a loading dock. Specializing In heavy equip ment, the companysells logging and fire trucks, road construction vehicles and implements and log ging tractors. Telephone From Automobile Soon New York, Dec. 20 (U.PJ American motorists may soon be able to telephone from an auto mobile to any number in the nationwide Bell system. The American telephone and Telegraph company announced today thnt extensive trials of mo bile radiotelephone service were being planned for three highway routes. Urban auto-tclcphone scvlce will begin within a few months in some cities, the com pany said. The highway trials will be made on routes totalling nearly ,000 miles between Chicago and St. Louis (via Ottawa, Peoria and Springfield, 111.); New York, Al bany and Buffalo and New York and Boston. To the "returnees" who will help make it the nation's hap piest Yuletide since 1940 Christmas of 1944 will be Just a memory of fight in Europe's I bitter cold and in the scaring heat of the Pacific Jungles, of manning the navy's warships, or of sweating out the war in army camps here and abroad. 5,250,000 Horn The army has sent to their homes some 4,250,000 GI's since VE-day last May. Last week the navy discharged the 1,000,000th sailor released since the Japan ese surrendered in August. Thousands of overseas veter ans were pouring into east and west coast ports on transports tin the week before the holiday, adding domestic discharges and those from other branches of the armed forces, some 6,000 000 ex-servicemen and women will be on hand Dec. 25 to cele brate the nation's first peace time Christmas in five years.
