EIGHT MEDFORD MAIL-TRIBUNE Wednesday. Dec. 5. 1945 Your Hsalth and It's Care Br OH- WILLIAM BRADY. M.D. Header! thou Id eddresi Inqulrlee toi Dr William Brady. 265 CI Cemino Beverly Hill. Colli. KEEP COOL A Men and women approaching middle age commonly develop thpse manifestations of long con tinued l o aine d e f i c 1 ency, without appar ent thyroid gland enlarge ment: Chronic tired feelings and lack of former a m b i t ion or pep, a state little if any re- 1 i e v e d by a rest or a vaca tion; a tendon- Dr. Brady cy to accumulate flabby excess weight, depression of spirits and a bleak or almost melancholy outlook; mental torpor and per haps some impairment of the memory; graying and falling of the hair, sallow or muddy com plexion, and other signs of pre mature aging; poor circulation as evidenced by cold hands and feet and a desire for more cloth ing or more artificial heat where normal persons are comfortable with light clothing and moder ate room temperature. The habit of coddling oneself. that Is, wearing more clothing than is necessary for comfort and heating the atmosphere above 70, contributes to the ac cumulation of flabby fat. On the other hand the habit of wearing only the minimum with which one can get by and regulating the household or shop or office temperature by thermostat set nt 68 or from 65 to 70 but never higher, contributes to the preser vation of youthful slenderncss and vite. Here again I quote Prof. Leon ard Hill, English physiologist: "It is absurd to put on an overcoat when going out for a walk. It is good to go out and be braced by feeling cold and so be impelled to take vig orous exercise." See what I mean? If you are practically sowed up for the winter you needn't take offence at my teaching about coddling. This Is a free country. But on the other hand if you are going to attend the football game as a spectator don't throw your long wool un derwear, your wool sox and your overcoat away you may need 'em to keep you from freez ing. However, it is purely and simply a question of your per sonal comfort and that's all. For everyday winter living, provided you go on living and Many Hard of Hearing Can Hear Tomorrow rill. Get the physiological principle of Dr. Hill s advice clearly fixed in mind when you go out in the cold without your coddling you are stimulated and the mus cular activity thus induced warms you up while you are burning off the superfluous. If you coddle yourself when going out you are depressed, relaxed, softened "feel the cold," you can't keep warm enough, and your body stores the unburned fuel as fat. ' QUESTIONS it ANSWERS Insoluble Mystery Last year our boy went oversea! and was seasick throughout the trip I asktsd for your instructions to pre vent seasickness, and on the next overseas trip he followed your in structions and was not sick at all.
