"I am a very nervous per son," writes a reader, "a n d have a dread of going to the dentist. Every time I. make Dr. Brady an appoint ment I can't think of anything else and get so scared and up set over it that I just can't keep the appointment. I have your booklet No. 19 but It doesn't help me any. What can you recommend to enable me to have the dental treatment I need?" For a first visit to the dentist have it understood that you are coming for examination only or perhaps for what the dentist calls' prophylaxis cleaning, scaling, polishing which is comparable to having your nails manicured or your hair dressed, so far as discomfort is con cerned. ' Not that I am not bs fond of comfort as any one nor that I can endure when there is any possible and reasonably safe way to avoid it. But I have learned to contemplate an ap pointment with the dentist with a good deal of satisfaction, be cause I want to keep fit and live as long as I can, and I know, If I know anything about how to keep well, that whatever treat ment the dentist may give me will help me Jo keep well and live long. I feel that way even though I expect the treatment may hurt some. The reader's panic over a visit to her dentist Is clearly a phobia, a morbid, irrational, un . reasonable dread or fear. If the treatment or surgery Is likely to be at all painful the dentist today can use local anesthetics and carry out the treatment or operation quite painlessly, and safely too. If the patient is obsessed with that twenty-one letter trouble which I hav been at great pains to spell out above, the family physician can give the patient a dose or two or one of the barbit urates (I shall not tell you which one) before the patient visits the dentist, and this will take the terror out of the seance. Or if the dentist is really qualified to call himself Doctor there Is no good reason why he should not give his patient this preliminary sedative when the patient dreads the treatment of opera tion like that. Apex means the tin or ootnt of the heart In the low er part of the lelt chest, the base of tha heart being In the upper part of the chest.
