rt RAMS CAPTURE PRO TITLE Detroit, Nov. 23 U.R) The Cleveland Rams, who never be fore had more than broken even a national football league sea son, headed home today with their first western division title. Sunday's Philadelphia-Washington game probably will name their playoff opponent. Cleveland's solid 28 to 21 vic tory over second-place Detroit yesterday clinched the division title for the Rams, and put them on the throne vacated by Green Bay. Green Bay lost another title yesterday, too, when End Jim Benton beat Don Hutson's pass-catching record by hauling in 10 of Bob Waterfield's throws for 303 yards gained 66 yards more than Hutson gained against Brooklyn in 1943. The Philadelphia Eagles hold the only victory over the Rams. Playing before 40,017 Detroit fans yesterday in freezing weather, the Rams took charge of the game from the start. The Rams have one more regular season game against Boston at Cleveland Dec. 2 but outcome of this game makes no difference. Vashington can clinch the eastern title by defeating Phila delphia, but an Eagle win would cause a tie and probably neces sitate a p'.ayoff for the right to meet Cleveland. It was reported that the Rose Bowl agreed to take Alabama into its Jan. 1 classic despite the possibilities that army would ac cept an invitation.
