'l j&sssflLassssssss a SIX MEDFORD MAIL-TRIBUNE Your Health and It's Care Br OR. WILLIAM BRADY M.D. Haadars ihould address Inquiries loi Or William Brady. 26ft El Cimlno BaTarJf Hilla Calit. THE PHYSIOLOGY OF FEAR From Raider the wolf In the next block to Dinky the Boston terrior next door, nothing with four feet and a gr-r-r-r-rh ever disturbed the rinmnAlir ftf rA Tony the Wir- lsh Terror, j SA though likely as not we dragged home' after the encounter a piteous wreck of what an hour or two before. IV- had been Dr. Brady handsome but Insufferably snobbish creature. On the other hand the abject terror the poor fellow suffered all through the Fourth of July which began, generally, about June 25, so far as noises indicat ed, had to be seen to be believ ed. At the first firecrecker pop Tony would come tearing into the house and crawl as far un dcr cover as he could, and stay there all day or until peace and quiet returned to the neighbor hood. Fear, fright or terror la an emotion common to man and animals. But anxiety, worry, apprehension or premonition plagues only man, especially civilized man. It is evident from the magni tude of the quackery and nos trum business in Yankceland that the majority of Americans who boast a high school or col lege "education" are woefully ignorant of physiology and hy giene. Both fear and rage, or diluted fear (worry, anxiety) and an noyance or irritation (diluted rage) cause more or less out pouring of adrcnin from the adrenal glands into the blood, and adrcnin brings out (mobil izes) sugar from the store of glycogen (animal starch) in the liver, the sugar being the fuel required to supply immediate energy. Energy for what? Ener gy for muscle work, whether in fighting or running away. Well, suppose culture, refine ment, convention, the need to appease or the need to retain good will or patronage or con fidence forbids such national re action. Then you are in a state comparable with an automobile engine racing with clutch re leased or gear disengaged. If you can't use your muscles In fight or flight, nor even excuse yourself to duck into the next room or go through some vig orous exercises, you must just (it or stand there and take it or the muscles of your heart and arteries must take it and that's the physiological explan ation of "nervous tension." Incidentally, this little lesson In physiology should make it clear why sedentary people should not become baseball or or football fans, but instead, if they want to enjoy life and live long, cultivate some sport, game or pastime in which they can participate themselves AC TION is what they need to save their arteries, even if it be just playing catch or pitching horse shoes or pushing a llttlo ball around a patch of greensward with a putter anything but vi carious excitement or make-believe. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Terpln Hydrate In an article on winter cough you menUoned capsules of terpln hydrate. What do these capsules contain? Aro they harmless? (M. T. G.)
