rOVm MKDrOMD MAIL-TlsIBUW WegneetUy, Wot. T. IMS Central Point Army Man Describes Experiences With Japanese Governor A dipping from the Nippon TVnea. leading newrapr of Tokyo, containing an article In which the nam of Capt. Erneet J. Lathrop of Central Point ap pear, hai been received by hla parent!. Mr. and Mn. A. T. La throp. The clipping tells of a conference, attended by gover non of iven prefectures and array officials, at which the gov ernors were warned "that their failure to make vigorous use of the means provided by Gen. MacArthur's headquarters to re activate the civilian economy will result this winter In unnec essary suffering and cold among the Japanese populace." In his accompanying letter the captain wrote, "To get up to Tokyo, I put my jeep on a flat car and went on the train as far as Chiba, then drove on over to Tokyo. I stopped In Park View Convalescent Home 153 Granite St., Ashland. Ore. Equipment for bed patients. Registered Nurse In Charge Chlba on the way back and had quite a talk with Gov. Saitor of the Chiba Prefecture. He Is a pretty good man to get along with. A Prefecture corresponds to a state at home. I spent most of the afternoon with the governor, then had din ner with him and the vice-governor at the governor's home. I had to catch the train back at 5:30 p.m. so it was kind of a hurry up affair, but I enjoyed It. He served an entirely west ern style meal, with roast chick en, baked ham and various other things. Even used a knife and fork Instead of chop sticks. The governor wants me to come back again when I don't have to be In such a hurry and he says he will serve an entirely Japanese meal. Should be In teresting. The governor doesn't speak English so I used an Inter preter. Nope, I don't speak Japanese yet and don't Intend to learn. In Japan, you always take your shoes off before enter ing a house, so that Is a novel experience for us to run around In stocking feet. I've had one more meeting Toy Specials Ovt tVaft. Long HOWLING ALLEY Reg. 7.45 NOW 5.29 T wtfh the governor since that day, and will likely go up again in a few days. Seems funny for me to be giving a governor orders. Later In the letter the captain said he hoped he would be able to return home before long and added "Those strikes aren't helping matters any, and neither is that typhoon around Okinawa I think we're getting a raw deal over In this theater, but guess we should be used to that now Somebody Is certainly messing up the works by not getting any officer replacements over here.' Capt. Lathrop has been In the army since before Pearl Harbor and was with the first army combat unit that landed in Aus tralia. He was en route to Man lis when the Pearl Harbor bombing occurred, and the outfit was then re-directed to Austral' la. After a stay In Australia his outfit set sail for Timor but when 9 out of 11 ships were sunk, the survivors turned back to Darwin. After being station ed at various Australian ports the men went to one of the Tro- bian islands and subsequently to New Britain, where they spent Christmas of 1943, from there to New Guinea. Leyte, and Luzon. On Luzon when the war end ed, Capt. Lalhrop was started at once for Japan and was on board a ship In Tokyo Bay and watched the peace treaty sign- ing on board the Missouri through field glasses. He is now with the 112th Combat unit.
