rOVR MtVDFORD MATL-TMBUMI Cecil Isbell, Purdue Coach, Named As Greatest Grid Passer Of All Time Chicago, Nov. 6 (U.R) Coach Xarl (Curly) Lambeau of the Green Bay Packers added new iuel to one of football's old argu ments today when he named Cecil Isbell. Purdue head coach as the game'i greatest all-time passer. "Isbell was a master at any range, short, medium or long ones." Lambeau said. "He could . throw soft passes, bullet ones or feathery lobs. "He's the best with Sid Luck- man of the Bears a close second and Sammy Baugh a long third. Luckman Is Just about a good, Lambeau said, but not quite as versatile while Baugh doesn't toss the long ones to comDare with Isbell. Isbell quit professional foot ball and the Packers three years ago in the prime of his career to become backfield coach at Purdue, where he first rose to stardom. He took over as head coach two years ago. Lambeau also said the Detroit Lions had the best chance to win the western division champion ship of the National Football league with the Cleveland Rams second choice and his Packers third. In the eastern division, he picked Washington and Phlla delphla as the two top teams. I, 14B PORTLAND IS SET HORSE RACE TRACK BY APRIL Portland, Ore., Nov. 8 (U.R) Portland was set today for a $500,000 jockey club after the visit here of William P. Kyne, colorful horse racing personality and general manager of Bay Meadows at San Mateo, Cal. During his visit in Portland Sunday, Kyne completed plans for a Portland Meadows and Rose City Jockey club costing more than half a million dollars and due to open if sanctioned by the Oregon Racing Commis sion next April. Vets To Benefit Adding to the attractive offer was Kynes demand that the track be controlled by the peo ple of Oregon with a generous cut of the proceeds going to Ore gon war veterans. The track will be on a 200- acre site In North Portland, lead ing to Vancouver. The site was formerly the Peninsula Golf Course and the East Vanport housing project. Seating capacity for the grand stand will be 10,000 with an other 10,000 capacity In the con course and Infield. A minimum daily purse of $800 Is planned, although it may ba upped to $1000, Kyne said. Bay Meadows now has a $1600 minimum. More than $230,000 has been subscribed toward the track's financing, with the remainder to ba available within a week. USC Attacked For Unorthodox Use Of Ends in Grid Game Los Angeles, Nov. 6 (U.R) The University of Southern Ore gon sweltered today under the torrid blasts of sports writers who condemned it for the un orthodox use of two ends in Sat urday's football game with St. Mary s College. Ends Harry McKinney and Jim Callahan checked out of SC when they received navy orders to report to San Francisco this week, explained Al Wolf, Times sports writer. "Then the date was changed to next week so they enrolled in school Thursday night to make It all very legal. They played Saturday and checked out again," he asserted. "Southern California by no means enhanced its standing in the public's estimation," added Ned Cronin, Daily News sports editor. The Examiner's Bob Hunter called the stunt "an aw ful hoax."
