PRODIGY TO HOLLYWOOD Detroit, Oct. 31 (U.R Frank "Sugar Child" Robinson, six-year-old Detroit Negro schoolboy hailed as the newest find in "boogie-woogie" piano playing, left today for Chicago on the first part of a trip which will land him in Hollywood for a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer musical. Tiller Mill & Lumber Company -Medford Telephone 2788 PECKHAM ACCEPTS E INSTRUCTOR AT SEATTLE George Peckham, former Med ford resident, was a recent visi tor at the home of hli parents, Mr. and Mrs. George r. Peck- ' ham, 219 Beatty street. At the termination of his army service Peckham accepted position as a teacher of voice with the Cor nish School of Fine Arts in Se attle. Mr. Peckham, a basso, whose voice was discovered by the late James Stevens beloved Med ford baritone of national fame was soloist at the First Church of Christ, Scientist of Seattle, staff artist on the NBC and CBS outlets, and appeared in concerts and opera throughout the north west before entering the army. His three years of army serv ice included, period with the medical corps, following which he was transferred to the San Antonio aviation cadet center in Texas, where his knowledge of radio gained him an assignment as a code instructor in the pre flight school. He was promoted through the ranks to the grade of staff sergeant before taking examination and receiving his appointment as warrant officer. Peckham was kept busy as featured soloist at the camp. Some of his most interesting ex periences besides entertaining in army hospitals, chapels, and Red Cross recreational units in cluded working as featured solo ist with such famous Hollywood and radio stars as Edgar Bergen, Don Ameche, Martha O'Driscoll and Joan Merrill on a huge bond rally. Grand champion bull, Bel mont Fifth, bred by Frank Riches of Buena, Wash., sold for 51,825 to Charles R. Carpenter, Ashland. Grand champion female, Dolly Domino 2d, bred by Mountcrest Ranch, Hilt, Calif., sold for $1, 325 to Walter P. Hubbard of Junction City, Ore. Herb Chandler's I first p'ace ! junior yearling bull sold for $1, 700 to Oscar Millican of Spring field, Ore. The reserve cham pion female bred by Pollock Hereford Ranch of Sacramento, went to the J Bar J Ranch at Medina, Wash., for $550. Re serve champion bull bred by the Horton Hereford Ranch of Klam ath Falls, sold for $700 to Emery cS: Son, Silver Lake, Ore. Don Nichols, Ashland walked off with the champion summer yearling bull which brought $1, 000 from the new owner, Sam Philips of Tule Lake, Calif. First five females sold aver aged $805 and the first five bulls sold for $1,257. Over all average on animals sold at auction this year was nearly 20 per cent greater than the average received in 1944. This was largely due to the bet ter quality animals consigned to the sale. Oct. 81, 1943 MEDFORD MAIL-TRIBUNE TVTt RAIN, FALLING LEAVES ' CAUSE DRAIN PROBLEMS Rains and falling leaves of the past 10 days have produced drainage problems in many sec tions of the county with back waters of road ditches, creeks and irrigation ditches flooding orchards and roads. A half dozen orchardists of the Arnold Lane district conferred with County Engineer Paul B. Rynning today relative to the waters of Daisy Creek and clogged ditches that overflowed. It was explained the county would clear the road ditches as soon as possible. In some or chards the irrigation ditches have become clogged, causing overflows.
