Qr J Twenty years ago the little house with the now sagginK doon and (alien porches had been a sturdy cottage, sheltering a pair of sturdy little boys and their parents. In other words the Barber family. Then we pur chased Hillside and as the years passed the little cottage being un occupied, It grieved me to see Its gradual decay. The windows were stolen: windows I had loved to make shining and white-curtained. The once so-gaily fig ured wall paper fell from the walls In mouldy strips and there was nothing to show that the pan try shelves had once sagged with their weight of preserves, pies and roasts. Yet each spring the plum tree spread sweet sprays of bloom over the eastern end of the house and daffodils glowed in a golden defiance of the decay going on so near them. Underneath the riot of brambles banking one side of the cottage, violets sent up the same perfume they had when there had been those living there to appreciate it. The pink ram bler rose, once so nicely trcl llsed, also refused to surrender and fell about the porch posts in a cataract of feathery green. Oh, I would sorrowfully re member, that little house had had its share of laughter and Christmas trees, feasting and friends and woodshed discipline. Its idleness and silence reproach ed me. I wanted to start ronring fires and once again give life to the still staunch chimney. I wanted to hang pictures on its walls and fill the rooms with real people, not just imaginary ones.. Two years ago this spring, I said I would never go again; to do so was too harrowing. But the other day I did go, and could scarcely believe my eyes. After twenty long years, some one had seen the possibili ties in the little place, with Its sweet spring water, fuel all about and the fruit trees which needed only a little care to be made productive; some one not afraid to grub out a few berry vines and do a little fussing with a saw, hammer and nails. For the yard had been cleared, the porches mended, new shingles made a bright new roofing and once again window pBnes gleam ed In the sun. And to complete the picture, a small white dog dashed out, barking furiously. Yet something was lacking. Oh, yes! I must, 1 saw, make my new neighbors the present of a duck to wake them mornings; and a hen to lay In the wood box. The radio systems, utilizing towers about 30 miles apart, will provide a larger number of channels for handling tciegrapn trafCic.
