Dog Who Traveled 6,000 Miles In Search of Master Leaves Camp White When Capt. Stanley C. Raye left Camp White Saturday for Letterman Hospital in San Francisco he tool along Joker, his Cocker Spaniel dog. The captain knows now that he musn't leave Joker behind whenever he goes anywhere for the last time Joker was left They keep on hitting the ball In the Army they hit the ball and in the Navy, too ! The did their part in the biggest job the world ever saw. They did it "right now"! And that, say many letters about service men who have returned to our employ, is still their way of doing things. Here's just one sample: "Sunday, a rental battery fell out of my car. The plate which held the battery had rust ed through. I managed to prop the battery in temporarily ... then called at your station. "Mr. Blank, the attendant, pent more than an hour devis ing a brace. Never have I seen a man work so hard on a task a task which wasn't in the Standard of California kit of services. In fact, he worked past his closing time. For initiative, Blank who told me he was just out of the service has my vote. I congratulate Standard of California on having him." To this we can add that every one in our organization finds inspiration in the vigor and conscientiousness shown by re turned service men toward their duties whether they were with us before, or have come in since doffing uniform. All through this war we have received letters from employees in uniform saying how eager they were to be back again with "the Company." We'd like to say right here and now how bappy we are to have them back. Daily, they're giving us new reason to be proud of our re turned service men. tflog wftfi 4 fton. awarded to oar UdMMftd lUfintry i.?nnanu. i) Wedding Gifts, Xmas Gifts A Karakul Wool Blanket or Robe on Sal in Banquet Room, Holland Hotel. Joker belonged to Raye be fore he entered the army, serv ing as a faithful companion for his master and watchdog of the Ray s infant daughter, Mavis, at the Raye home in Pittsburg, Calif. When the .captain was sent overseas tho devoted dog was heartbroken, refusing to eat and searching ceaselessly for his master Leaving home, he wan dered to Oakland some 30 miles distant and attached himself to a com-janv of soldiers about to leave for overseas. He boarded the transport with the men and after hiding for a time, then ap rieared to begin his search among the men When the ship's commander sentenced him to death, a kindly major adopt ed Joker and took him ashore on a Pacific island. No one knows how Joker found his way to the little Island whore he fii.ally found his mas ter. Three months after Joker had left home th captain look ed out of his tent one day and couldn't beMeve bis eyes when he saw the dog coming past the tent with anothei officer. In the three months he had travel ed some 6,000 miles. Joker staved with Capt. Raye until his return to the United States and spent three weeks at Camp White with the officer. Joker's storv was featured in the Oct. 21 issue of the American Weekly, copies of which were received by the captain before he left Camp White last week.
