That is, if there is sufficient muscular exertion or activity to use the energy. If the conventions of civiliza tion or the rules of propriety prohibit such natural or primi tive reaction to emotion, that is. the everyday emotions, vexa tions, affronts, Irritations and annoyances in business,' profes sional, social and domestic life, then the machinery of the body is bound to suffer from exces sive Wear and tear. There Is only one way to protect the body against such damage keep the belt on the flywheel, keep the clutch engaged, get sufficient ex ercise, physical work, active play every day. According to Joslin, recog nized authority on the subject, there are 400,000 persons In the United States who have diabetes and 23 per cent of Our entire pop ulation, that is, approximately thirty-three million persons are "carriers" of the potentiality or tendency to develop diabetes by inheritance. Indeed Joslin de fines diabetes as "an hereditary disease, characterized by an in crease of sugar in the blood and the excretion of sugar in the urine". Duffle, in his famous "Book for Us Diabetics", publish ed by Dr. Don H. Duffie, Cen tral Lake, Michigan I regard It as the best $2 investment a dia betic or a potential diabetic can make says a diabetic is one who "is starving for sugar while his blood is full of it . . . his blood sugar rides 'round and 'round on the delivery wagon instead of be ing delivered". The diabetic can not burn the glocogen (blood LEGAL NOTICES NOTICE OF APPOINTMENT - OF EXECUTOR 111 the County Court of the State of Oregon, for the County of Jackson. I strongly suspect and this is all I have to say about it that a good many people who gamble recklessly with their health un der the erroneous impression that they have "weak nerves" whatever that may mean in re ality suffer from mild unrecog nized diabetes. That's all, I can't tell you anything more about it. By way of prophylaxis, pre vention and even cure of some of the complaints these victims of mild undiagnosed diabetes as cribe to "nerves", I offer this ad vice: In the great majority of cases the sufferers can work, walk, play it off. Within reason the effects of In sulin, vitamin Bl, (which I call poor man's insulin") and physi cal activity are similar, whether you have diabetes or not. They all tend to increase or improve carbohydrate metabolism, the ox idation of glycogen or blood sug ar to yield physical (muscular) energy (the only kind of energy we can measure).
