Washington, Oct. 11 U.R) Tha agriculture department to day predicted that tha 1949 corn crop will reach 3,078,126,000 bu ahels. This compares with an estimate of 3,060,095,000 bushels made a month ago and actual production of 3,228,361,000 bu shel! last year. The department said thnt na tional crop prospects declined slightly during September, but total crop production still prom Ises nearly to equal previous banner years. Areraae Yield Un All crop estimates were based on conditions as of Oct. 1. The department said that the average yield of corn per acre Is likely to be 33.4 compared with 33.2 bushels In 1944. The combined spring and win ter wheat crops were set at 1,- 149,829,000 bushels, compared with 1,078,647,000 In 1944. The department commented that rainfall for September was the heaviest for the month since 1928. Nevertheless, food grain production was placed at the largest In history and feed grain production at the second largest. Other Crops Production estimates for other crops compared with 1944: Oats, 1,983,690,000 bushels this year and 1,166,392,000 In 1944. Barley, 277,246,000 and 284, 426.000 bushels. Flaxseed, 39,899,000 and 23, 627,000 bushels. Grain sorghums, 109,138,000 and 181,796,000 bushels. Sov beans 106,887,000 and 192.863,000 bushels. Potatoes, 438,395,000 and 379, 436,000 bushels. Sweet potatoes, 89,071,000 and 71.691,000 bushels. Tobacco, 2,036,881,000 and 1,850,213,000 pounds. Sugar cane, 7,112,000 and , 148,000 tons. Suagr beets, 0,400,00 and 0,- 793,000 tons. Hops, 95,810,000 and 47,995,- 000 pounds. Peaches, 81,954,000 and 75 963.000 bushels. Apples. 66,754,000 and 124,- 794,000 bushels. GIVEN CITATION FOR WAR EFFORT ' A citation for meritorious service In connection with salv age work during tha war has been received by the Jackson county salvage committee. The award, presented through the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, reads "In acknowl edgement of meritorious aervlce rendered on behalf of the na tional war aalvaga program, this citation la awarded to the Jack son County Salvage committee." The award was signed by J. C. Krug, chairman of the war production bourd. Last chairman of the salvage committee was R. A. Duff ind othera who have served as chair men are Wayne Jamison, now in the army, Henry Zachariscn and A. S. Cummins. Duff stated that E. H. Hedrlck of Medford and C. R. Bowman and George M. Green of Ashland, as well as scores of other persons, hud rendered great service in con nection with the various salvage drives during the war. But I can make It seem as If I were doing Just that. I don't object to being called a trickster," said Eads, "as long as It's understood I'm a legitimate trickster." ' Explodes Old Ideas Eads exploded many of the old ideas on magic. "First, a modern magician wouldn't think of using his sleeve to aid In per forming a trick. Besides being Inartistic and unnecessary, the sleeve has another serious dis advantage. It is the first place the audience suspects. Everyone watches a magician's sleeves too closely for him to get away with anything "Second, the hand Is not quicker than the eye. You may prove this to yourself. Move your hand before your eyes as quickly as you can. Your eyes will be able to follow the motion no matter how rapid it is. Third, mirrors are rarely used by ma gicians, although people are al ways Imagining that every big trick Is done with their aid. Be sides being expensive and easily broken, they simply are not practical since the present day magician appears on a brilliant ly lighted stage. Supper Rolls Place Vi CUP shorten ing; 1 teaspoon salt and 2 table spoons sugar into large bowl and add l't cups lukewarm water; stir well. Stir in one beaten egg and one cake fresh yeast crumbled. Add 3Vz cups sifted all-purpose flour all at once and beat with fork to make a soft dough. Spoon batter into well-greased muffin pans, filling half full. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise about 1 hour, or until light. Bake in moderately hot ovn (425 F) 20 minutes or until lightly browned. Makes 18 rolls.
