OFF TO COOS BAY About 24 Medford high school football players, three managers and Coaches Al Simpson and Ed Kirtley left at 8:30 a. m. today by bus for Coos Bay where they will meet Marshfield high school tonight.. They will return Satur day afternoon. Simpson said competition for tackle positions remains wide open with Joe Flicgel showing up well. He may get the starting call in favor of Lynn Bessonette while Herbert Nill is hard-pressing Tom Mottern for the other tackle spot. Jerry Ross has been shining In practice all week and will prob ably be picked to start at quar terback in place of Earl Stelle, Simpson said. The entire squad is In excellent condition and Simpson said he did not expect the low altitude at the coast city to bother them too much. Detroit Awaiting Crucial Two-Game Series With Cards Detroit, Sept 28 (U.R) The Detroit Tigers, who have been in first place In the American league for 109 straight days, were begging destiny today to lot them stay here alone Just two more days, giving them their seventh American league pen nant. The Washington Senators are waiting in agonizing Idleness to see what happens in those last two games between Detroit and the Browns at St. Louis, tomor row and Sunday. If the Browns should win them both, the Tigers and Senators will finish in an ex act tie. The Tigers embarked for St. Louis weary from a nerve- wracktng stretch campaign. SHELLS SCARCE Deer hunting In Oregon opens tomorrow with many hunters al ready established in their favor ite spots, waiting the zero hour. Bag limit consists of one mule deer or one blacktail having not less than forked horns. In Doug las county whltctail deer with forked horns or better may be taken. Local sporting goods stores re port a great scarcity of ammuni tion but stated many hunters have stored up a supply to see them through the deer season. What little ammunition is avail able has been pro-rated by manu facturers qn 1941 sales, one store spokesman said. No rifles are available for sale. Conte.t Offered The many licenses which have been sold indicate a large num ber of nimrods plan a search for deer. Lamport's Sporting Goods store is sponsoring a "Big Buck" contest. A merchandise prize of $15 is offered for the largest black tail and mule deer and a $10 merchandise prize for the smallest. Deer must be displayed for one hour at Lamport's and may not be entered in any other contest, it was stated. Kenneth Denman, Medford at torney and member of the state game commission, said commis sion estimates indicate a plenti ful supply of blacktail deer. The mule deer fawn crop did not reach expectations, Denman said, and it is impossible to estimate whether there is an Increase or decrease in that particular specie. Trout can be taken in most any section of the river. Best water, with single eggs, Is at the break of a riffle, In fairly fast water, where salmon are spawning. Limit catches have been reported the past week, with fish taken In water as low as a foot and not over 10 feet from shore. Some anglers have had good result, on .pinners, sixes two and three. They celebrated unofficially last night when a Cardinal de feat at Pittsburgh, following their own double daytime vic tory over the Reds assured them of a tie. The Cards were trounced by a 5-2 score. But the big "blow-off for Charley Grimm's happy-go-lucky club won't come until they win the game against the Pirates they need to clinch the pennant for good. SEAMEN GET RAISE Washington, Sept. 28 (U.R) War Labor Board today ordered a $43 monthly wage increase for 30,000 licensed seamen employed by .42 Atlantic and Gulf Coast and 31 Pacific Coast shipping companies. The blaze was believed to have started in the blower, spreading rapidly throughout the mill. Located near the junction of Neil creek and highway 99, no fire-fighting equipment was available although volunteer fighters and crew members com batted the conflagration. Two Southern Pacific freight cars on a siding and some Calif ornia Oregon Power company poles were burned, cutting off electricity to the area. The of fice, located a short distance from the refill proper, was saved but the rest of the plant, includ ing a small amount of lumber, was destroyed.
