Detroit Awaiting
Crucial Two-Game
Series With Cards
Detroit, Sept 28 (U.R) The
Detroit Tigers, who have been
in first place In the American
league for 109 straight days,
were begging destiny today to
lot them stay here alone Just two
more days, giving them their
seventh American league pen
nant. The Washington Senators are
waiting in agonizing Idleness to
see what happens in those last
two games between Detroit and
the Browns at St. Louis, tomor
row and Sunday. If the Browns
should win them both, the Tigers
and Senators will finish in an ex
act tie.
The Tigers embarked for St.
Louis weary from a nerve-
wracktng stretch campaign. In
juries are keeping such stars as
Hank Greenbcrg and Eddie Mayo
from operating at top efficiency.
Manager Steve O'Neill took time
out for a hospital checkup earlier
in the week.
In the only American league

SHELLS SCARCE
Deer hunting In Oregon opens
tomorrow with many hunters al
ready established in their favor
ite spots, waiting the zero hour.
Bag limit consists of one mule
deer or one blacktail having not
less than forked horns. In Doug
las county whltctail deer with
forked horns or better may be
taken.
Local sporting goods stores re
port a great scarcity of ammuni
tion but stated many hunters
have stored up a supply to see
them through the deer season.
What little ammunition is avail
able has been pro-rated by manu
facturers qn 1941 sales, one store
spokesman said. No rifles are
available for sale.
Conte.t Offered
The many licenses which have
been sold indicate a large num
ber of nimrods plan a search for
deer.
Lamport's Sporting Goods
store is sponsoring a "Big Buck"
contest. A merchandise prize of
$15 is offered for the largest
black tail and mule deer and a
$10 merchandise prize for the
smallest. Deer must be displayed
for one hour at Lamport's and
may not be entered in any other
contest, it was stated.
Kenneth Denman, Medford at
torney and member of the state
game commission, said commis
sion estimates indicate a plenti
ful supply of blacktail deer. The
mule deer fawn crop did not
reach expectations, Denman said,
and it is impossible to estimate
whether there is an Increase or
decrease in that particular specie.

One Win to Cinch
National Pennant
Cincinnati. Sept. 28 OJ.R)
The Chicago Cubs, who have
maintained a first place margin
of at least a game and a half ever
since acquiring the lead on July

last night when a Cardinal de
feat at Pittsburgh, following
their own double daytime vic
tory over the Reds assured them
of a tie. The Cards were trounced
by a 5-2 score.
But the big "blow-off for
Charley Grimm's happy-go-lucky
club won't come until they win
the game against the Pirates they
need to clinch the pennant for
good.
The Cubs won their 19th dou
bleheader of the year and their
seventh from Cincinnati, 3 to 1,
