TEN MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNfc Your Health and It's Care B7 OR. WILLIAM BRADY M.D. Redr ihould ddrli tnqulrie to: Dr William Brady. 265 CI Camine Bavarly Hillt. Calit. FISHING DAYS For years we have enjoyed your articles. They are always entertaining reading, never leave a m o r- bid or anxious alter effect and we have derived a lot of good from your teach ings. You are the kind of fel low the writer would like to have as com panion on a fishing trip Dr. Brady once in a while. (A. L. J.) Thank you for the Invitation, sir, but fishing . . . never again A few years before the war we stopped along the highway there one afternoon to watch the salmon climbing ladders That is a wonder I just couldn't believe till I saw it same as the taking off of a big airplane One fish which must have weighed fifteen pounds, over shot and flopped out on a plat form above the ladder. In a jif- fv some youths waiting there clubbed the fish to death and bore it off (the laws, If any, not withstanding). Any one who knows the life cycle of salmon will understand why I have dreamed of that bit of cruelty many times since it happened. I was cured of hunting on the first and last occasion I went hunting. A man who took me along was anxious that I should bring home something from my first hunting trip, so he carried a ferret (which was against the law, but quite the custom in that neck of the woods). When he found a likely look frig hole he would load his shotgun, stand ten feet away, send the ferrit In. and when the rabbit appeared blaze away at the bunny. Yet that man was In all ordinary re spects a kind gentle and most likeable chap. Not that J m no conscien tious I believe I might like the job of killing a few thousand German "supermen" and Jap sub-human creatures. But I have an imagination and it makes me sick and angry when I see some sadistic moron proud ly displaying the deer, the birds, the fish he has managed to kill by means of almost automatic machinery, never by his own skill. Now if any reader should take it into his head to invite me to accompany him on a hike or a trip of any kind to study natural history, or on a walk around the block to identify birds, trees or anything of the kind I'll be delighted just a sec. till I get my cross-country pipe loaded It is not abnormal if a young child catches a little bird, chick en or bunny and deliberately kills the creature but it hardly seems normal when a grownup derives pleasure from similar killing of helpless creatures with his cruel traps, guns, lures and snares.
