NEILSON, District Attorney for Jackson County, Oregon, and Attorney for Plaintiff, County Court House, Medford, Oregon. 8.46 29.41 68.96 oavc mm Barber's W-l Letter I W 1 i 209 97 113.96 S.54 I used to think, when I would read letters written by young men, that they had a gaiety, a devil-may-care 1 n g r e d i ent In their makeup which women lack. But I am beginning to wonder if the rascals haven't been spoof ing a too credulous matron. So often they have whooped with mirth over a situation a woman would regard as tragic, that I have given them credit for a robustity wholly masculine. And I wonder If they are as scornful of the conventions as they would have me believe. For instance: "Last night I made a reserva tion at night club and took my girl for an evening of whoopee. Everything stlnko with swank; had to have your coat and tic along; that sort of place. There was a leggy floor show, colored lights and fine band. But for a real time, give me a 'Jernf where I can open my shirt front, roll up my sleeves and cut a rug free and fancy." There was a time when I would have taken this at Its face value, but I am beginning to wonder. I get letters from girls and women In the service and always they give me the Impression that nicy nave actually leu tne drama they were helping enact. And they haven't liked the mud and lack of the decencies of living to which they had been accustomed In civilian life and they have frankly said so. Yet a lad writes: "The rats In our floorless, lightless tents are as big as cats. But I'm used to them by now; as I am the ants and lizards In my bed. Wish I could do a little Jungle prowling but we are not allowed to; might be ambushed by Japs; or even shot by our own patrols. The rule Is, shoot; then see what you have hot at. "My breakfast was K ration and we made coffee over a blow torch. Out here, we use amphib ious craft exclusive; and have to build roofs over them to keep them from filling up. The way it rains here, makes the Pacific coast seem like a desert. But we don't mind. We don't even both er to try to keep dry." I remember what a battle the average wife has to put up to get her husband to shave and bathe and change his underwear and I'm beginning to wonder if a lot of this isn't man's way of proving to women that he is a tough-fibered buckaroo; and I bet that lad really enjoyed the more formal demands of the night club; and that soldier did not want to prowl the Jungle and that he does mind "rats the size of cats." In fact I think the young rascals have been taking me for a ride. Could be. G. Pass Red Cross Finishes Dressings Grants Pass.
