GREEN SCALES AND You should have stopped after you said "I am not chemist enough" to tell why the "U. S P. uses mean- In g 1 e s s and confusi n g terms" for such prepara tions as iron and a m m o n ium citrates.1 Take five min utes out from your bowling, Doctor, and read what the U. S. Pharmar- Dr. Brady copoeia says about red scales and green scales or granules. It says Iron and Am monium Citrates consists of thin, transparent, garnet red scales or granules, very soluble in water." The Pharmacopoeia lurther says Green Iron and Am monium Citrates consists of thin, transparent, green scales or granules, readily soluble In water." The red scales or gran ules contain more iron than the green scales or granules. The red scales or granules are preferable lor administration by mouth, the green scales or granules (in so lution) preferable (less irritat ing) for injection. (. Lt. (Jg) USIMtt). Thank you. Lieutenant. Gen erally, when I refer to the pre paration at all, I quote the Phar macopoeia description, as you do. Incidentally it Is the drug gists who are to blame for most of the confusion regarding this preparation. When a customer asks for "iron and ammonium citrates' or when a physician prescribes "Ferri et Ammonii Citratis" the druggist has no ex cuse for bringing green scales or granules Into the discussion. The U. S. P. (legal standard) name for the garnet red transparent scales or granules is Iron and Ammonium Citrates. If the cus tomer asks for, or the physician prescribes green Iron and am monium citrates the name for it, according to the Pharmacopoeia, ureen iron and Ammonium Citrates. Until the U. S. Pharmacopoeia quietly drops Iron and Ammon ium Citrates, as it does a few old standby medicines at each decon- lal revision, there is no good rea son why the druggist should be in doubt what a customer wants when the customer asks for, say, one ounce of Iron and Ammon ium Citrates. Once you have it, n is easy to prepare your Iron tonic" Just put the ounce of garnet-red scales or granules In a four-ounce vial and fill the vial up with boiled water after the water has cooled a bit. It makes a clear red solution. Not as bad tasting as you may think. Harm less to the teeth.
