Just what IS Socialism?
According to the "Britannica" Socialism is we
quote:
That policy or theory wnicn aims at securing Dy tne

If that definition is correct then, of course, the
victory of the Labor party in England could properly
be called a victory for socialism

THE point we wish to make is this:

talistic, private-profit system has been abandoned,
leaving the United States out on a limb, the only capi
talistic country left in the world.
It merely means, as before stated, a sharp turn to
the left the EXTENSION of a socialized economy,
rather than its inauguration or complete adoption.

I JLTIMATELY England may become a socialistic
state. So. for that matter, may the United States.
The trend certainly throughout the world for half a
century has been in that direction. And that trend
has been tremendously accelerated by the world war
now drawing toward an end.
But extending socialistic reforms on a capitalistic
base is one thing, adopting Socialism as a national
program and abandoning the capitalistic system quite
another.
By the election of a labor government England
has done the first, but not the second. Until the latter
has been done, it is incorrect and misleading to de
clare England has gone socialistic R.W.R.
What Is Communism?
As a postscript to the above a clearer definition
of political terms might well be extended to Com
munism also.
What is Communism?
Nine out of ten people would no doubt answer
it is the sort of government that prevails in Soviet
Russia.
But those, who know about such things declare
this is not true. Communism means the abolition of
all private property and hold'np- the same in common.
DUT in Russia 757o of the people own nothing. The
. state owns most of the land and all the lartre in
dustries, while the state is controlled by a small group
of bureaucrats presided over by the supreme dictator
of all Generalissimo Stalin.
This is a socialistic dictatorship, not communism
at least so the experts claim, although pro-Russian
enthusiasts like to point to the Soviet Constitution as
democratic.
Whatever Communism is or isn't, we holWo n
clear-cut definition of the term by some political Su
preme Court would clear the atmosphere and be of
great service to a somewhat bewildered world in its
