Santo Promoted Word has been received here by Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Santo of 616 S. Ivy street that their son, Albert R. Santo, chief storekeeper in the navy, has been promoted to as sistant to the commissary officer. 1, Catchei Salmon Van Gilbert eturned to his home at 135 N. Holly street yesterday with a 30 pound salmon caught in Puget Sound while on a vacation in Seattle. . Gilbert visited Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Bonney and their two sons. Clan Picnic The Homemak ers class of the First Methodist church held a picnic Friday eve ning at the McKee bridge with 50 young married couples and their families attending. Swim ming was followed by dinner, games and-singing. ' VUitor Leaves Mrs. Ed Brown of San Francisco left last night after spending a week visiting with her sister, Mrs. Bert R. Elliott at the Elliott farm home. Mr. Brown formerly taught in the Rogue River school, and is now assistant superinten dent of the San Francisco schools. On Leave Frank J. Brown, radioman first class, is in Med ford on a 30-day leave visiting bis mother, Mrs. Beulah Brown, at the family home, 505 Beatty street. Brown has spent 37 months on active duty in the Atlantic and Pacific, and is a survivor of the destroyer U.S.S. Twiggs which was sunk June 16 off Okinawa. Passed For Service The fol lowing Jackson county men were approved for general mili tary service July 19 at Portland following pre-induction physical examinations through Jackson county board No. 1: Charles Wes ley Martin, Glenn Orin Cleven and Robert Nathaniel Pyle. Milo Harold Hardin was approv ed for military service. Thierolf Promoted Notice of V the promotion of Capt. Richard . D. Thierolf to the rank of major was received jn Medford today in a telegram relayed from the Philippine islands where Thier olf was stationed for two years before coming home recently on leave. The major, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Thierolf of 907 S. Oakdale avenue, is flow en route to Ft. Knox for two months training in a tank unit. Dodion Home Pvt. James Dodson arrived in Medford last week on a 30-day furlough, hav ing Just returned to the United States from Germany. His wife, the former Elva Chesnut, has made her home at 320V4 Apple street, uodson was overseas 11 months and wears the purple heart medal and European thea ter badge. On expiration of his lurlough he will report to Ft. Lewis, and then Oklahoma. i In Accident Mrs. Frank ."Pence, 726 Alder street, was taken to Community hospital Saturday afternoon after receiv ing minor injuries in an auto ac cident at the intersection of Third and North Front street, local police reported today. Mrs, Pence was a passenger in a car operated by her husband which was in collision with a truck op erated by Fred W. Hale, Central Point, according to the report. Cars Collide Damage esti mated at $150 was caused to an auto driven by Frank Huntsuck er, 1005 West Main street, Satur day when it collided with a car operated by Arthur Theodore Newman at an intersection on Old Highway 99 near Talent, ac cording to an accident report at city police headquarters. Ifwifii T DANIEL BILES OF GOLD HILL DIES Daniel L. Biles, 66, for the last IS years a resident of Gold Hill, passed away in a Grants Pass hospital early Sunday. Mr. Biles was born at Kerby- ville. Mo., Feb. 25. 1879. Be sides his wife, Ida Biles, he leaves three children, Chester Biles, of Long Beach, Calif.; Veltie Biles, Gold Hill and Mrs. Bryan Ward of Medford; six grandchildren and one' greatr grandchild. Demand lightened sharply and modest offerings often were suf ficient to bring declines ranging to 2 points. Traders proceeded cautiously pending clarification of reconversion plans and the Pacific war situation. Pan American airways, most active issue traded, accounted for about IS per cent ot all busi ness done on the market. There were a few other actives far un der Pa American. Two places which closed up the first of the month have reopened and a new one opened. Most of the places take a day off each week and are handi capped by shortages of food and help. The latter situation is not as bad as it was earlier this year, some operators report. One of the chief troubles, they say, is getting butter. The restaurant owners recent ly discussed the question of hav ing a "meatless" day but were unable to reach an agreement on the day of the weefc.
