LOCAL and PERSONAL In Seattle Van Gilbert, 133 N. Holly street, is spending a va cation in Seattle, visiting Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Bonncy, and his two grandsons, Bart and Brad. In San Francisco Pfc. Louis W. Powell and Bill Patton left Thursday for San Francisco to spend a few days visiting friends end relatives. Justice Belt Here Justice Harry H. Belt of the state su preme court in Salem left Friday to return north after spending a few days in the valley visiting friends and fishing In nearby streams, Visiting Here Mrs. Lewis D. Hall and son of Salem, Ore., are visiting at the home of Mr. and Mr I.. H. Smlck. 427 Haven street. Lt. Hall is in command of a ship in the South Pacific, where he has been stationed for the past year. Herrled Hera Lt. Donald E. Herried and his recent bride, the former Joan Grace of Chicago, are in Medford visiting Lt. Her ried's parents, Mr. and Mrs. El mer Herried, 1431 Euclid ave nue. The lieutenant Is stationed at Glenview, 111., with the ma rine air corps. McKlbben Leaves Ferney M. McKibben, apprentice seaman in the coast guard reserve, left Thursday night for Manhattan Beach, N. Y., where he will be stationed for a month before go ing to Groton, Conn., for prep aratory school for the U. S. coast guard academy. McKibben was graduated from Medford high school this year, and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. McKibben, route 1, Central Point. D, Lubbers, Jr., aviation radioman third class, is home on leave visiting at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John D. Lubbers, box 389F, Medford. Stationed last at Beau fort, S. C Lubbers will report to Moffal Field, Cal., July 29. Breaks Ankle Mrs. Blanche Moulton sustained a broken an kle in a fall last Tuesday after noon, and will be confined to her home at 101 W. Clark street for some time. Mrs. Moulton is a former employe of the postoffice substation on Bartlett street, now moved to Central avenue. To Seattlei-Lt. G. R. Berg man (M. C), U. S. Navy, and family left Wednesday for Seat tle where he has been assigned, after having served 18 months overseas as flight surgeon with the 7th air wing. Mrs. Bergman is the former Lois Frazee, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. O. D. Frazee of Medford. At Camp Roberts, Zane E. Kemler, formerly manager of the MacDonald Candy Co., in Med ford, was inducted into the army through the Portland selective service board in June, and is now at Camp Roberts, Calif., for basic infantry training. Mrs. Kemler and their two sons are making their home here at 822 Minnesota avenue. Receives Discharge James Harry Conlon, a former private first class with the 25th Infan try division, arrived In Medford last Sunday from Ft Lewis, Wash., where he received an honorable discharge from the army on the point system and Is visiting friends and relatives In the city. Conlon has been in the service five years, 33 months of which, were served in the South Pacific. Schmitt Dies New of the death in Los Angeles Thursday night of M. P. Schmitt, former resident of Medford, has been received here by a friend, Mrs. Larry Espey, 819 Park street Burial will take place Monday at the Church of the Recessional, Forest Lawns, Los Angeles. Mr. Schmitt left the city several years ago to make his home with a daughter, Ozellne Schmitt, at 773 Washington drive, Highland Park, Los Angeles. Joins Waves Miss Betty Buckingham, who went to Port land Wednesday to take her phy sical examination for the Waves, has been accepted for training In the" corps and will report to Hun ter College, N. Y., August 5, ac cording to word received by her mother, Mrs. Laura Alberts, 236 S. Central avenue. A graduate of Medford high school In 1944, Miss Buckingham has been em ployed at the California Oregon Power Co., for the past year. She will enter a medical unit for hospital work. Miss Bucking ham's father is Roy Buckingham of The Dalles, and she has a brother, Sgt Allen Buckingham, in an ordnance company doing heavy automotive maintenance in the Philippine Islands. Cordova Discharged T4 Eloy Cordova has rejoined his wife and daughter here follow ing his discharge at Fort Lewis on the point system after serv ing in the army since Sept. 18, 1940. Cordova saw action in Italy where he served for 16 months in the 81st division. He received the Purple Heart for wounds sustained Feb. 22, 1945. Mr. and Mrs. Cordova make their home at 1018 West 10th street. Nellson on Leave Lt. John H. Neilson, son of District Attorney and Mrs. George Neilson, 430 North Bartlett street, is spend ing a 30-day leave in the city visiting his wife at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Harwood, 502 Park street. The lieutenant arrived In the United States recently from the Mediter ranean theater where he has been stationed since February. He will report to Ft. House Entered The home of Ben Trowbridge on 1825 East Main street, was entered some time Thursday night and thor oughly ransacked, local police re ported yesterday. Nothing was missing, it was reported. James Morrow Hera Flight Officer James A. Morrow, snn of Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Morrow. 531 North Bartlett street, ar rived home Tuesday for a delay en route visit with his parents. Morrow, In the Air corps two years and last stationed at Sel man field, La., will report to the army air Dase at Lincoln, Neb. Mrs. Jones' Son Dies on Okinawa Mrs. Walter Jones, 1113 South Oakdale avenue, has received word of the death in action of her son, Pvt. Robert Russell Mc Callister, May 15, on Okinawa. Russell, who entered the army in October, had attended school In Salem. Besides his mother, he is survived by his father, Russell MeCallister, Portland, his wife, the former June Porter, and daughter of Tillamook, and two brothers, Gene, with the army in Italy and Richard, with the Pa cific fleet. Corporal Home Cpl. Edward V. Chesney arrived home yester day on a 21-day furlough from the South Pacific where he has spent the past 23 months with the Sixth Air force. Cpl. Chis ney is visiting his wife at the family home, 748 West Fourth street. Officer Here Second Lt. Ed- j ward R. Potter is spending a 10-day leave in the city visiting his wife and her parents,- the Rev. and Mrs. Wolford A. Dawes, 60 Ross Court. The officer has been stationed with the Army Engineers at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., and will report for over seas service upon expiration of his leave. ; Reside In City Mr. and Mrs. Peter Schmer are making their home in the city at 211 North Columbus avenue following his honorable discharge from the army. Schmer, who has been in the army a total of almost seven Vears, received the dis charge from Camp Beale, Calif., and was stationed at Camp White , for some time. IN FALL HARVEST Picking of the Rogue River Valley pear crop will start about Aug. 15, according to a state ment by the Rogue River Val ley Traffic association. Latest estimates indicate a large'r crop than last year. Combined esti mates indicate there will be 267,000 more boxes than last year when there were 1,942,000 boxes. Bosc pears are the only variety which seem to be under last year. Last year there were 582,826 boxes of Boscs and this year's estimate is 562,028 boxes.
