LEVERETTE NAMED NEW CAPTAIN OF SHERIFFS POSSE At the annual meeting of the Jackson County Sheriff's Posse held Wednesday evening at the Chamber of Commerce, Sheriff Howard Gault appointed Walter Leverette, local orchardist and theatre owner, captain of the Sheriff's Mounted Posse. Sheriff Gault remarked that posse interests had been con stantly in the mind of the late Syd I. Brown and that before his death he had selected Walter Leverette as the man he wished to head the posse for the ensuing year. Sheriff Gault stated that he heartily concurred in this se lection. Dr. Charles Lemcry in charge of finance and ticket sales for the Fourth An nual Rodeo reported a nice prof it for the show. As a token of appreciation for his efforts as general chairman of the Fourth Annual Rodeo, C. L. "Flash" Fidler was presented with an engraved silver and gold belt buckle. Leverette announced that a series of rides and social events were scheduled for this summer and fall, the first of which will be a ride and outdoor dinner at the Hughes ranch on Ross Lane, Sunday. The Chet Leonards and William Grenbemers will join with the hosts in preparing the dinner. Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Roberts, 1011 West 10th street, received a telegram yesterday notifying them of the death of their son, Donald Gus Stinson, chief store keeper in the navy, on July 11. The message states that Stinson died "as a result of an intra cranial injury sustained in an accident in service of his coun try." Details were unknown to the parents, but are expected in a later communication from the war department. The telegram adds that burial was in an allied cemetery, out side the continental limits of the United States. Stinson was 32 years of age, and had been in the navy nearly 12 years. He was stationed on Midway Island at the time of the Japanese attack there in De cember, 1941. Last word re ceived by his parents a month ago was from the Pacific theater. A Medford high school gradu ate, his last visit to the city was two years ago. NO TRIALS IN AUGUST, JUDGE HANNA DECIDES Circuit Judge Herbert K. Hanna reports he will hold no trials during August but will devote most of the judicial vaca tion month to writing rulings and decisions on long pending cases. "The Ashland area needs a class I airport, with a landing strip on a general NWSE align ment, preferably on a site per mitting future expansion of that strip to approximate class 2 size and standards," J. R. Peavy, dis trict airport engineer of the De partment of Commerce, Civil Aeronautics Administration, said in his report following examina tion of the local situation. The Balfour-Guthrie site could be approved by CAA as being suitable as a class I or II air port and could be eligible for Federal aid if Congress makes it available In the future, Peavy said. Difficult topographic condi tions of the Ashland area were mentioned in the report but en airport was recommended be cause of the mild equable cli mate and meteoroligical condi tions being favorable to flying. Class I airport standards, as set down by CAA, call for 300 feet minmum width by 2,300 feet minimum length landing strip. Various sites were considered but the Balfour-Guthrie site se lected because it is not subject to smoke or bad fog conditions. E LOCAL CANNERY Pear shippers of the city have agreed to provide the Rogue Cannery Inc., with between 1,700 and 1,800 tons of Bartletts for canning this season, Ray mond R. Reter of the Reter Fruit company reports. All the ship pers will contribute to the total. The tonnage is about twice that of last year. Too Lute to Classify 12:13 p. m. c CREW TO BATTLE APPLEGATE FIRE Smoldering for the past few days since a recent lightning storm in the area, a small forest fire in the Applegate district was reported to forest service head quarters 'this morning and men were dispatched to extinguish the blaze. Supplies were also being dropped Today by airplane on top of Brown Mountain near Lake O' Woods , and Eugene Pyeatt left this morning to hike up the mountain and assume lookout duties for the remainder of the fire danger period. Ttie station will be maintained as a one-man lookout, and all food and other supplies will be dropped by airplane as no trails ascend the mountain.
