CM RECOMMENDS
SITE FOR AIRPORT
I N ASHLAND AREA
Ashland, July 19 Civil Aero
nautics Administration recom
mended to the city council in a
recent report that a class I air
port be constructed on the Balfour-Guthrie-
lands, about two
miles northwest of Ashland.
"The Ashland area needs a
class I airport, with a landing
strip on a general NWSE align
ment, preferably on a site per
mitting future expansion of that
strip to approximate class 2 size
and standards," J. R. Peavy, dis
trict airport engineer of the De
partment of Commerce, Civil
Aeronautics Administration, said
in his report following examina
tion of the local situation.
The Balfour-Guthrie site could
be approved by CAA as being
suitable as a class I or II air
port and could be eligible for
Federal aid if Congress makes it
available In the future, Peavy
said.
Difficult topographic condi
tions of the Ashland area were
mentioned in the report but en
airport was recommended be
cause of the mild equable cli
mate and meteoroligical condi
tions being favorable to flying.
Class I airport standards, as
set down by CAA, call for 300
feet minmum width by 2,300
feet minimum length landing
strip.
Various sites were considered
but the Balfour-Guthrie site se
lected because it is not subject
to smoke or bad fog conditions.
No definite plans or action have
been taken up by the council re
Iative to the airport development.
