BIX MEDFOHD MAIL TRIBUNE Tuiiday, July 17, 1845 Your H2alth and It's Care ' By DR. WILLIAM BRADY M.D. Raadera ihould address Inquiries loi Or William Brady. 265 CI Camino BeTerly Hills. Calif. AY RODS TODAY? By Grade Allen and Oeortfe II u rag Illustrated by Erie Ericson ' WHY SOME PERSONS GET APPENDICITIS " In an earlier talk about appen- dicitis I mentioned the usual muse Infection, by the com mon colon Da c i 11 u s, the pneumococcus, the notorious s t reptococcus, and the com' mon pus - pro ducing strains of staphylococ cus. I mention' ed also the sus- p 1 c i o us f re- auoncy o i Iff. iffiMflissaW acute append!- Dr. Bradv cltis as a com plication of or a sequel of one or more attacks of acute sore throat, acute tonsillitis, quinsy. The germs are cultivated in the infected tonsil, or perhaps in a . neglected Infected root canal or dental abscess, and a colony of the germs is carried through the blood stream to lodge In the tis sues of (not In the lumen or in terior of) the appendix, where acute inflammation occurs. In most cases of acute appen dicitis the infection is through the blood stream, not directly from the Interior of the appen dix or the intestine. Even when the attack Is due mainly or chief ly to colon bacillus infection, the route is via blood stream from a focus of infection In some dis- ' tant part of the Intestine, say chronic or recurring piles, or a minor intestinal ulcer in large or , small intestine. Occasionally the tissue of or surrounding the ap pendix is infected by direct in . vasion from the lumen or interl - or of the appendix or the large intentine (cecum) or head of colon with which the appendix is connected. This is the mode of infection when the inflamma tion is due to entrance of pin worms or round worm into the appendix, which happens occa sionally In children who harbor : such parasites, as a good many ' young children do without any apparent disturbance of their health. Ordinarily the appendix ' ad mits nothing. Contrary to common notion lodgment of seeds, bits of fruit skin or peel, bird shot, needles, pins, hair, pennies, marbles, teeth, chalk, sand, bran gum or other foreign or undigestible matter, Is only rarely if ever a contributing cause of appendicitis. Even the presence of pinworms or round worm, revealed at operation, is debatable, as a contributing cause of the appendicitis, in the opinion of many good physi cians. They maintain, with much experience in exploratory sur gery (opening for inspection) that the parasites, when present In the Intestine, often lodge in the appendix without any ap parent disturbance of the host s comfort or health. Moreover it is the present belief of most phy sicians and surgeons that such foreign bodies lodge In the ap pendix rather as a consequence of one or more attacks of appen dicitis, for, as already men tioned, a healthy normal appen dix does not admit food or other substances. By now I hope you will have forgotten that I have not ac knowleged any other cause of appendicitis than bacterial infec tion. But let your bowels alone and next time I'll give my Idea, since there is no consensus of medical opinion, about the pre disposing factors of appendicitis. JWI. Olive Barber's Letter I mm For years and years the bee was, to me( Just a bee and noth ing more. Oh, I had a vague gratitude that bees Improved each shining hour to the end that I might have honey on hot bis cuits but superimposed on this gratitude was the anything but vague memory of the lew times they had sat upon me to my pained surprise. Then my husband acquired several hives and I became bee conscious In a different way al together. I've learned that a bee no more desires to sting than an American aviator desires to fly a suicide plane. For a stinging bee does Just that he makes a suicide landing. Using his sting, leaves a wound from which- he quickly dies. So not unless called upon to give his life in defense of the bee body politic win ne give me stab which means his death. . Nor are bees apt to sting when swarming. Bees swarm only when out to establish a new home. Before they start this mi gration they prepare for it much as humans do for a like exodus they load themselves with as much property as they can car ry, wun uie bees, this is hnnv So laden, they usually are un able to curve the sting around their burden and are harmless. It was interesting to learn that a queen mates but once. This single mating continues to fer tilize her eggs for the rest of her life, though she lay from 1300 to 4000 eggs per day for the next five years. The drone mating with her dies immediately after this is accomplished. Those In favor of universal military training could find ar gument for this by citing bee be haviour. Young bees Serve In the army before they become workers. Their Job is to police the hive, keep out and destroy invaders and protect the inhabi tants of the hive. Not until an other crop of youngsters Is hatched and ready to take over tills task of defense are they at liberty to turn from military service to labor in the field. To me the most amazing of all bee activity is their ability to take an egg Intended to evolve into a plebian and turn it into royalty. They do this by giving the egg larger housing and when hatched, different food. Who knows, the same might be true with us humans. Most any of us could get pretty hoitctoity if her cottage were turned Into a pal ace and she were fed caviar in stead of potatoes and gravy.
