Handlar United Press Correspondent Gdansk (Danzig), Poland, July 6 (Delayed) U,PJ An experi mental laboratory for the manu facture of aoap from human bodies was inspected by corre spondents today. This chamber of horrors is one of the few buildings still Intact In this ancient Hanseatic city. Still standing In the laboratory are the pressure boilers, the soap residue, tanks of chopped human fat and flesh. Skulls Litter Area Outside the laboratory the ground is littered with whitened human skulls and bones the waste products of this ultimate nazi atrocity. There is no doubt about what went on in this one-story, red shingled gabled house. It is lo cated in the yard behind the buildings of the anatomical and pharmacological institute of the Danzig medical school, at No. 7- A Delbruck street which the Poles have renamed Curie-Skla-dowski street, in honor of Mme. Curie. One assistant who worked at the laboratory has been cap tured and we were allowed to question the half-demented man. His testimony filled in details of factory. On the ground floor the labo ratory is divided Into two rooms. Each is fitted with pressure boil ers. They are of white enamel and look like oversize washing machines. There are also sev eral smaller pressure chambers in which bones were rendered. The soap was poured out into flat dishes or cylinders resem bling ice-cream containers. Fat Fills Bin Alongside one pressure boiler was a bin filled with dried hunks of skin and fat, removed from the human bodies, and ready for the boiler. In one cylinder con tainer there were vestiges of yel low soap and a block of hard ened flaky soap was on the table. On a wall were two .black boards on which the schedule of work in progress was marked in chalk. In the basement of the ana tomical school we saw tanks filled with corpses of Poles and Russians who had been hanged, shot or guillotined and whose bodies were used for laboratory purposes. There were whole bins filled with the heads of guil lotined victims. We questioned Slgmund Ma zur. Identified as a laboratory assistant, at the state security headquarters here. He appeared half-crazy. He Identified the di rector of the laboratory as one "Professor Spanner." Mazur, 23, slight, thin-faced and blond, was suffering from a ner vous tick but his answers were fairly coherent. He said he be gan as an ordinary laboratory as sistant at 120 marks a month and finally was raised to 169 marks a month. He said Professor Spanner ar rived at the laboratory Feb. 15, 1941, and announced he had a formula for making soap and that production would be started. Human fat, Mazur said, had been accumulating since 1940 at the institute. Made Good Soap Asked if the soap was good quality, Mazur said it was. He said that his mother knew what he was doing and did not approve of it but that "Spanner knew what to do. He insisted that my mother and sister use the soap. They liked It." Participa tion of army personnel to assist federal and state agencies in combating forest fires will be made again this year during the dry season, William E. Shedd, commanding general of the Ninth Service Command, an nounced at Fort Douglas, Utah. A cooperative forest and brush fire control program has been worked out between the Ninth Service Command, the Fourth Air force and Western Defense command to assist the Forest Service and other similar agen cies in the area which Includes the state of Oregon. In forest fire emergencies Jus tifying military personnel and equipment, such personnel may be called out to work with the regular forest fire control per sonnel. Gen. Shedd said. Valuable assistance has been rendered by military units from camps located within the state of Oregon in fighting fires in this area during the last three years.
