TONSILS THEM AND NOW Some readers may remember the time when doctors, nurses! even- school teachers thought nothing of tak ing a look at a child, deciding the child had the a d e n o id 1 a c c i e s and sending a note to the parent saying the child must have adenoids and tonsils re moved all this without Dr. Brady even a pre tense of proper medical examina tion, that is, without having seen the adenoid in the throat mirror or felt the mass with the exam ining finger. Thousands of chil dren who were inattentive, dull, backward in school, whether from congenital or inherent mental deficiency, unrecognized disease or malnutrition, were subjected to operations which were largely unjustified, back in the early years of the century when the tonsil and adenoid op eration was the great surgical fad." I flatter myself that I made some of my best enemies in the medical profession by calling public attention to some of the more shameful abuses in that field and creating in the popular mind a wee doubt of the reli ability of the doctor who con demns a child to the guillotine and snare on the basis of a mere look at the child's large tonsils. Large tonsils are normal in healthy children, and there is no ground for subjecting the child to the risk of general anesthesia to remove them, except in rare instances when breathing is ser iously obstructed or the hearing On the Radio Chain STATIONS Chain affiliation and where they are on the dial: KALE (MBS) 1330, Portland; KEX (ABC) 1190, Portland; KGO (ABC) 810, San Francisco; KGW (NBC) 620, Portland; KJR (ABC) 1000, Seattle: KNX (CBS) 1070, Los An geles; KOA (NBC) 850, Denver; KOIN (CBS) 970. In most school children the tonsils are larger in late winter and early spring, smaller in sum mer. Probably both tonsils and ade noid body , (third tonsil in vault of pharynx or throat up out of direct sight behind soft palate) probably serve a useful function or functions, especially in child hood, I shall not speculate here about such functions. - At any rate it is certain that merely en larged tonsils and adenoids are not in themselves harmful and it is absurd to imagine it is nec essary or advisable to remove every bit of such tissue in fact only the greater part of the tis sue of enlarged tonsils and ade noids is removed in any in stance, no matter what method is employed or what pretenses the doctor, surgeon makes about it.
