Farrell, Oregon secre tary of state, which featured an open meeting of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce board of directors Friday noon at the Holland Hotel, committee heads reported on various mat ters of interest. Sixty men and women from all parts of the val ley attended. Strong interest in this district is being shown by lumber manu facturing firms and firms spe cializing In manufacturing from lumber by-products according to Karl Janouch, supervisor of the Rogue River National Forest ser vice. Janouch pointed out that the lumber re-manufacturing and by-products plants would mean a much increased payroll from the lumber industry, and added that as soon as the war is ended lumber production would have to be curtailed since all forests are now being over-cut to supply necessary war mater ial. When the forests of this dis trict are returned to the sus tained yield basis, some firms will be forced out of business and the others will have to re duce production, Janouch said, Baker Reports Eugene Ferrell of Fluhrer's bakery . reported on the local shortage of fats used by bakers and restaurant, operators and stated that an effort was being made through the district's con gressional delegation to have additional supplies released. Mayor Clarence A. Meeker urged a large attendance for the outdoor talk Monday night of Governor Earl Snell, who will speak from the steps of the old courthouse "In Jacksonville at 8 p.m. following a dinner spon sored by the Sons of the Ameri can Revolution and Daughters of the American Revolution. Also making reports were Clarence Winetrout of the cham ber roads commitee and Moore Hamilton, chairman of the pub licity committee. Visitors Introduced Also introduced during the meeting were Harry Schenk, assistant secretary of state; Clar ence Ellis, manager of the de partment of financial responsi bility for the state; Dr. Lloyd B. Staples, of the school of geology of the University of Oregon who is cooperating with the county group on mineral surveys; Sen. Earl T. Newbry, Ashland; Rep. Frank Van Dyke, Ashland and Rep. O. H. Bengtson, Medford; Mayor T. S. Wiley, Ashland and Mayor Howard Lewis, Jackson ville, who presented an affilia tion check from the newly or ganized Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce unit. The results of Dr. Staple's survey of mineral resources here will be disclosed at the next regular meeting of the chamber board, Friday, July 6. Petty Officer Moore will be at the navy recruiting station in the Post Office daily from 9 a. m. to 6 p. m. from June 18 to June 26, inclusive. Arrangements for night appointments may be made by calling the recruiting station, reports Chief W. R. Cumley, re cruiter in charge of the Medford U. S. navy recruiting station, which handles WAVES applica tions in this area. In order to staff navy facili ties adequately and to meet other requirements, the navy needs 10,000 Hospital Corps WAVES. More than 13,000 Hos pital Corps WAVES are now on duty. The hospital corps training of fers opportunities for service and training in various fields that will be useful as post-war occupations. Any young woman who is an American citizen, between 20 and 36 years of age, has completed two years of high school, has no children under 18 years of age and is in normal good health is eligible. Greater benefits now accrue to WAVES, including good pay (equivalent to $142.50 a month to start, all tax exempt), $200 cash allowance for the new smart uni forms, life insurance at low-cost government rates, all the advant ages of the GI bill of rights, bene fits of USO, American Red Cross, navy relief where needed, over seas service, travel, interesting work, educational benefits and opportunities to receive instruc tion in many different specialized fields. - . Used Car Ceilings Will Drop July 1 Ceiling prices for used pas senger cars will be reduced four per cent on July 1 in accordance with the "rollback" provisions of the used car price regulation, the local OPA has announced. The reduction in price applies to used cars sold by either deal ers or private owners. Also to be reduced four per cent on July 1 are charges al lowed for extra equipment on used cars such as heaters, radios and other built-in items for which additions to base ceiling prices are permitted. ' Coca-Cola Supply Will be Reduced By Sugar Dearth The supply oil Coca-Cola in Medford and trade area definite ly will be affected by the further curtailment of the sugar supply after July 1 because the manu facturer will not compromise with the use substitutes, accord ing to Wayne H. Jamison, man ager of the Medford Bottling company. However, an equi table system of rationing will be maintained in Medford and trade territory during the short age, Jamison said. "The OPA announced last week that the allotment of sugar to industrial users would be cut July 1 to 50 per cent of the amount used in the third quarter of 1941. I am informed that this sugar shortage is world wide and directly attributable to the con fusion in production and distri bution of sugar occasioned by the war," Jamison stated. "Sugar is absolutely necessary in Coca- Cola manufacture.
