FOUR MEDFOBD MAIL TRIBUNE Society and Clubs Couples Wed In Double Ceremony At Jacksonville A double wedding ceremony June 9 united in marriage two valley couples. Miss Beverly Stancliffe, daughter of Mrs. George A. Bourne, Route 4, Med ford, nnd Bert Stancliffe, Phoe nix, was married to Donald Gold en, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. J Golden, 108 Lincoln street, and Miss Erma Minger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Mlnger, 2117 Capitol avenue, became the bride of Galo Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Johnson, Central Point highway. The double service took place at the home of the Rev. Law rence Mitchelmore, Jacksonville, with the pastor reading the cere mony at 2 o'clock in the after noon. . Miss Stancliffe wore a two piece white linen suit with white accessories and a corsage of sweetpcas. Miss Minger's wed ding costume was a two-piece powder blue suit with white ac cessories and her flowers were gardenias. Attendants for both brides were Miss LaVonne Golden and Miss Donna Ray Johnson. Mr. and Mrs. Golden will re side in Medford at 211V4 North Peach street, the groom being employed by the Goodyear com pany, and Mr. and Mrs. Johnsoh will reside with the groom's par ents for the present. Mrs. John . son is a graduate of Medford senior high school and Mrs. Gol den was a student at Phoenix high school last year. Bridge-Luncheon Given Saturday Honors Miss fumy Miss Deborah Tumy, who Is to be married later this month, was honored guest at a luncheon given Saturday afternoon by Mrs. W. Garland Jones. The af fair was at the home of Mrs. Jones' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Al fred S. V. Carpenter, Topsidcs. Following luncheon the guests swam and played bridge and Miss Tumy was presented a shower of gifts. About 25 of Miss Tumy's friends were pres ent. ' Miss Tumy's fiance, Richard C. Ashcom, Is to arrive next week-end from Wayne univer sity at Detroit and the wedding will take place June 28 at St. Mark's Episcopal church here. Jun 17, I94S Wave, Navy Man Married June 9 In Service Here Miss Olive Austin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Austin 310 Laurel street, and Martin J. McGrath. son of Mr. and Mrs, Peter Frielburg of Portland, were married June 9, the cere mony taking place at Sacred Heart Catholic church here, Both are in the service, the bride being a Wave and the groom in the navy. The service was read at 11 o'clock in the morning by Father Thomas Hamilton. Miss Emily Austin, sister of the bride, and Jim Miller, Medford, were at tendants. For her wedding the bride wore a light blue suit with white accessories and a corsage of gar denias and rosebuds. A wedding breakfast was ser ved at the Medford Hotel and Mr. and Mrs. McGrath then left for Portland to visit the groom's parents. Later they reported for duty at the naval air station, Klamath Falls, where both are stationed. The bride Is a phar macist's mate second class in the Waves and the groom a pharma cist's mate first class with the navy. Mrs. McGrath is a graduate of St. Mary's Academy high school here, while the groom attended school in Portland. Mildred Prather Becomes Bride Of Medford Man In a simple ceremony which took place in Medford the after noon of June 9, Mrs. Mildred Prather, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Kleger of Clatskanie, became the bride of Carl Pylcs, son of Mrs. Florence Pyles of Medford. Arrangements of snapdragons and roses were used to decorate the Presbyterian Church parlor where the couple exchanged their vows. The Rev. Harry W. Hansen officiated. Immediately preceding the ceremony Mrs. William McAllister sang "O Promise Me," accompanied by Mrs. H. E. Marsh. Mrs. Ethel Morrison, Klamath Falls, and Melvyn Pyles, brother of the groom, attended the cou ple. For her wedding the bride had chosen a pastel blue two-piece silk jersey dress with white ac cessories and a corsage of garde nias. Mrs. Morrison was attired In dn ivory crepe dress with pink and blue accessories. She wore a corsage of pink carnations, Mrs. Florence Pylcs, the groom's mother, wore a gown of gray and violet figured mesh with a corsage of sweet peas. Guests at the ceremony in cluded Mrs. Mclvin Pyles and Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Trippett of Klamath Falls. The bride and groom will make their home al Medford where the groom Is a district manager for the California Ore gon Power company. Prior to her marriage Mrs. Pylcs was employed by the Klamath county school district. Guest Day Affair Given by Chapter At Leavitt Home Chapter BE of the P.E.O. Mrs. Leonard Carpenter, Ver ; itas Orchards, will leave today i for San Francisco where she will spend the week on business. Miss Peggy Young Is Betrothed To Frank Rogers, Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Young of the- Griffin Creek district an nounce the betrothal of their daughter, Peggy Anne, to Frank Rogers Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rogers, Sr., GcBauer apartments. The wedding Is planned for early fall.' Miss Young returned to Med ford June 5 from Prlncipia col lege, Elsah, 111., and plans to leave the first of next month for San Francisco, where she will study this summer at the Chris tianson ballet school. Her fiance, until recently s first lieutenant in the army air corps, has returned home after serving in England with the air force as a pilot and is now on the inactive list. He will leave July 1 for Chicago for assign ment with United Airlines. Mr Rogers graduated from Medford high school in 1941 and was as sistant dispatcher for United Air lines at San Francisco at the time of entering the army in October of 1942. Miss Young graduated from Medford high school with the class of 1944 and entered Prin cipia last fall. Legion Auxiliary Elects Officers Medford Hall Mrs. Doris Baize was elected president of the American Le gion Auxiliary for the coming year at a meeting held last week, the last before the summer vaca tion of the group. Elected to as sist her in carrying out the pro gram of the organization were Nettie Ellcnburg, first vice-president; Gloria Minneci, second vice-president; Irene Stevens, secretary; Mable Wiley, treas urer; Norma Martin and Mae Co ble, sergeants-at-arms: Ruth Par ker, Belva Aiken, Grace Holmes, members of the executive com mittee. These officers will be formally installed and assume their duties in September. Mrs. Baize is the wife of Dick Baize, veteran of war II, who was recently elected commander of the Legion post. Mrs. Minne cl's husband Is serving with the armed forces in the South Pa cific and Mrs. Wiley is the wife of Charles Wiley, veteran of this war, who has served the Legion as adjutant the past year. Mary E. Hawlcy, president of the newly organized auxiliary at Central Point, was introduced and officers of the Medford unit were Invited to assist In In stalling officers at Central Point on June 28. Refreshments were served the post and unit members by Belva Aiken and Hulda Thurman, as sisted by Ray Wright and Lyle Thurman. ' Lady Elks Will Hold Last Meeting of Year Lady Elks will meet Tuesday at the temple following which the group will adjourn for the summer months. Mrs. C. E. Kunz and Mrs. Maude Snider will be hostesses and special prizes will be given. The group meets at 2 o'clock for dessert and games. t - M. Rogue River Girl Bride of Yeoman In Home Wedding Rogue River Miss Geneva Moore, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Moore, and Harold E. Hargitt, U. S. N., son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hargitt, Rogue River, were united in marriage Sunday, June 3, at Cozy Corner Farm, home of the bride's par- ents on Evans Creek. . ! The ceremony was performed by the Rev. D. E. Millard in front of a rose banked fireplace. Miss Joan Millard, of Medford.) and Roscoe Hargitt, brother of! the groom, attended the couple. The bride's wedding costume was a navy blue dress trimmed with white and worn with white accessories. Her flowers were a corsage of red roses. Miss Mil lard wore a light blue suit with white accessories and a corsage of white carnations. Both the bride and groom are graduates of Rogue River high school and the bride later at tended Southern Oregon College of Education at Ashland. The groom, yeoman second class, has been in the navy for two years, the last 18 months of which was spent in the South Pacific. Guests at the wedding, in ad dition to immediate members of the family, were Mrs. Mary Moore, Mrs. Robert Hargitt and children, Joann and Richard; Sam Rigel; Cave Junction; Or ville Rigel, Klamath Falls; Mrs. Millard, Medford; Mr. and Mrs Jesse Rigel and children. STORE Announce Date Lester-Minear Wedding Rites The wedding of Miss Zavlve Lester, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lester, Crater Lake high way, to Donald M. Minear, son of Mrs. Jessie Minear, Route 1, has been set for Sunday, June 24, In the First Baptist church. Miss Lester has been employed by the Medford schools for the nt wn vfart while Mr. Minear is manager of the Minear orchard and dairy, Route 1. Botn attend ed Medford high school, Miss Lester graduating with honors in 1943 and Mr. Minear with the class of 1939. He later attended the Los Angeles Bible Institute. In the past few weeks the bride-elect has been honored at several showers. Among those entertaining were the staff of the Medford junior high school, who gave a kitchen shower; Mrs O. O. Caster and Mrs. Ray Ed wards, with a miscellaneous shower, and the Golden Link Sunday school class and young people of the First Baptist church, who entertained with a miscellaneous shower at the home of Mrs. Edith Whillock. 1003 West Main street. Friends Receive News of Wedding Of Grace Currie Medford friends have received news of the wedding o Miss Grace Currie, daughter of Mrs. John A. Currie and the late Mr Currie, former Medford resi dents, to Kenneth C. Hanson of Portland. The service took place June 8 at the Lutheran church. Vancouver, Wash. The bride graduated from Medford high school and later attended college at Canton, New York. The Curries lived in Med ford while Mr. Currie was asso ciated with the Tomlin factory, later the Timber Products com pany, and after Mr. Currie's death returned to Canton, their former home. In recent years Mrs. Currie and her daughter have resided in Portland and the bride was on the staff of the Milwaukie high school. Mr. and Mrs. Hanson will make their home at 4312 East Burnside street in Portland. D.A.R. Chapter Flag Day Picnic Held Last Week The garden of Mrs. H. F. W. Spilver on Hamilton street was the scene of the Flag Day picnic held last week by Crater Lake chapter, Daughters of the Ameri can Revolution. The picnic ta bles were centered with red, white and blue flower arrange ments. Following luncheon Mrs. Hel en Dixon presented excerpts from the book, "A Great Time to Be Alive" by Harry Emerson Fosdick and also read from "Re port on the Russians" by W. L. White. Mrs. Bert Lowry, Oregon state regent, stressed the study of the national defense program and the impending legislation for peace and post-war plans. Here from Salem are Mrs. Lloyd San ders and two sons, Philip and Steven, Mrs. Rosalie Porter and two children, George and Judy, Salem, and Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Starnes and two children, War ren and Sue, from Portland. AH are former residents and well known in the city. Mr. and Mrs. Starnes and chil dren are guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Miksche, 813 Minnesota avenue, and the two families have been spending considerable time at the Miksche summer home at Shady Cove. Mrs. Por ter is a guest of Mrs. Edwin R. Durno, 1913 Hillcrest Road, and the Porter children are visiting their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Porter, 828 Minnesota avenue. Mrs. Sanders and her sons have been visiting Mrs. San ders' mother, Mrs. Stella Hen- drickson, Girls' Community club,, and will leave for home today. Tonight Mrs. Dwight Findley and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Fish are entertaining at a dinner party at the Findley home on Glen Oak Court for Mr. and Mrs. Starnes and Saturday afternoon Mrs. Fish entertained the mem bers of her bridge club with Mrs. Porter as special guest, Mrs. Porter having formerly been a member of the club. The affair was at the Fish home, Catherine Court. Friday afternoon Mrs. O. H. Bengtson and Mrs. Lyle Wilcox were hostesses for an affair which honored Mrs. Sanders, the party being at the Bengtson home, 122 Oregon Terrace. Mrs. Miksche entertained Thursday at an afternoon party which honor ed Mrs. Starnes, inviting a group of Mrs. Starnes' friends to the Miksche summer home. Church Society To Hold Picnic Women's Missionary society of the Presbyterian church has planned a picnic for this week the affair to be Tuesday at the home of Dr. B. R. Elliott, Route 2. Mrs. A. V. Hardy and Mrs, Horace Thompson will provide the program and special music will be furnished. It is stated that those wishing transportation should meet at the church at 12:45 p. m. Those attending are asked to bring a dish for the picnic menu, while rolls and beverages are to be furnished. Wisconsin Visitors Arrive Here Saturday Mr. and Mrs. Frank Thomas ser of Milwaukee. Wis., arrived in Medford Saturday morning to spend the next two weeks with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Roemer and family, 431 West Eleventh street. A few will return for summer ses sions. , Among those home from Ore gon State college are the Misses Ruth Andrews, June Jarmin, Joan Humphrey, Alpha Whil lock, Alice Day and Mildred Mc-' Kenzie. Returning from the University of Oregon were the Misses Beverly Jones, Virginia Hammond, Nina Tuttle,' Helen Webb, Betty Rose, Joyce and Joan Utz, Margaret Thompson, Eva Hedrick, Betty Frey and Anne Scripter. Miss Lois Pnngle and Miss Barbara Inskecp are home from Stanford university and Miss Pa tricia Farrell is expected home today. - Bob Pittenger, Bob Davis and Harry Nordwick are home from the university and young Nord wick is returning immediately for the summer session. Jacksonville Chapter To Hold Initiation Initiation will be held by Adarel Chapter No. 3, O. E. S., when the chapter holds the last meeting before summer adjourn ment Thursday. A covered dish dinner at 6:30 p. m., at the hall will precede the meeting. The worthy-matron urges a large at tendance and states that visiting members are welcome. Visitors Return Home From California Trip Mr$. Ina Huson, Lozier Lane, and her daughter, Mrs. J. A'. Phillips, South Peach street, re turned home Thursday after vis iting relatives in California. Mrs. Phillips visited Mrs. Alena Er skine, Oakland, and also spent some time with her son, Dick, electrician's mate, before he re turned to sea duty.
